Introducing Offsite PPA: JR Kyushu's Move Towards Solar-Powered Shinkansen

JR Kyushu's Revolutionary Shift to Solar Power

In a groundbreaking initiative, JR Kyushu, alongside Kyushu Electric Power, Envivo Holdings, Fuyo Lease, and CRE, aims to supply solar energy for its Shinkansen operations. This move will be supported by an Offsite Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), making it the first of its kind for JR Kyushu. The collaboration emphasizes the shift towards sustainable energy solutions and reducing carbon emissions.

What is Offsite PPA?

Offsite PPA is a model whereby consumers of electricity receive power generated at a location distant from their premises. This model facilitates a sustainable approach to powering the transportation sector, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

Project Details

This initiative focuses on supplying renewable energy to the Kyushu Shinkansen Kagoshima Route. The solar energy will be sourced from photovoltaic systems installed atop logistics facilities developed and managed by CRE. The electricity generated will be routed through Kyushu Electric Power to JR Kyushu's operations.

Supply Timeline

The supply of energy is scheduled to commence gradually from August 2027, setting an ambitious timeline for JR Kyushu's transition to cleaner energy sources.

Scale of Supply

The project will utilize solar power with an output capacity of approximately 8,000 kWdc across Fukuoka and Saga Prefectures. Annual generation is projected to be around 9.8 million kWh, significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 4,600 tons, which is equivalent to the usage of roughly 1,800 average households.

Commitments to Decarbonization

JR Kyushu's Environmental Vision

In February 2025, JR Kyushu unveiled its long-term environmental strategy, "JR Kyushu Group Environmental Vision 2050." The group's pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2035 from 2023 levels underscores its commitment to environmental stewardship. The vision is centered on co-creating a future that harmonizes with natural ecosystems.

Kyushu Electric Power's Carbon Neutral Goals

In April 2021, Kyushu Electric Power launched the “Kyuden Group Carbon Neutral Vision 2050.” This approach aims to minimize greenhouse gas emissions from business activities to achieve a carbon-negative status by 2050. The initiative emphasizes electrification and contributing to regional and consumer needs for carbon neutrality.

Envivo Holdings' Commitment to Sustainable Society

Envivo Holdings emphasizes addressing environmental issues through innovation and sustainable practices. Their renewable energy division targets the promotion and expansion of solar power, reaffirming their commitment to create a society focused on sustainability.

Fuyo Lease's Shared Value Strategy

Fuyo Lease is pursuing a medium-term management plan aimed at creating shared value to tackle social challenges while achieving economic growth. This initiative positions energy and environment at the forefront of their strategy, facilitating diverse energy-related ventures.

CRE's Sustainable Logistics Focus

CRE specializes in the development and management of logistics facilities with sustainability in mind. Their collaboration with Envivo focuses on integrating solar energy solutions in their facilities to promote green electricity generation and minimize environmental impact.

Conclusion

JR Kyushu’s adoption of solar power through an Offsite PPA not only showcases the transformative potential of renewable energy in the transportation sector but also sets a precedent for collaborative efforts towards sustainable practices. As these initiatives progress, they symbolize a significant stride towards realizing a carbon-neutral society, highlighting the importance of corporate responsibility in mitigating climate change.
