APP Group Collaborates for Landscape-Scale Conservation Efforts in Sumatra

APP Group's Commitment to Landscape Conservation in Sumatra

APP Group, in collaboration with Proforest, WWF-Indonesia, and KKI WARSI, has embarked on a significant journey toward environmental conservation through the initiative known as PROTECT30. Launched in February 2026, this program aims to enhance biodiversity protection and strengthen community resilience in the critical Bukit Tigapuluh landscape of Sumatra.

Recently, the consortium celebrated an essential milestone by planting a 17-hectare area with local fruit trees designed to support the native Sumatran elephants. This project is one of the initial actions toward ensuring long-term conservation efforts in the region, which spans approximately 400,000 hectares. This area encompasses a mix of both lush forests and local villages that are integral to the socio-economic fabric of the surrounding communities.

Why Bukit Tigapuluh?

Bukit Tigapuluh is recognized as one of the last significant natural forest landscapes in Sumatra. This breathtaking region is home to vital biodiversity, including about 10% of the global Sumatran elephant population and a significant number of Sumatran tigers and orangutans. These species are not just important for ecological balance; they represent cultural and economic assets for local communities that rely on the forest for their livelihoods. By planting locally sourced fruit trees such as jackfruit and cempedak, the initiative aims to boost food resources and improve habitat connectivity for these endangered elephants, enhancing their chances for survival and stability.

A Model for Sustainable Collaboration

The successful execution of PROTECT30 hinges on strong collaboration among various stakeholders. According to Elim Sritaba, Chief Sustainability Officer of APP Group, sustainable advancements in conservation efforts cannot be achieved by any single entity alone. It requires commitment from businesses, local communities, government agencies, and conservation organizations to create a thriving ecosystem. The consortium is focused on establishing collaborative governance, developing shared methodologies, and nurturing trust to promote effective landscape management.

Part of the initiative includes engaging with local government bodies such as the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and the Jambi Provincial Forestry Service. Through these partnerships, PROTECT30 aims to develop governance frameworks and methodologies that will support long-term ecological health and enhance community well-being.

Framework for Future Generations

In addition to promoting biodiversity, PROTECT30 is also keen on implementing activities that align with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Remedy Framework. This reflects APP's overarching commitment to responsible forestry practices that ensure sustainable environmental and social outcomes over time. To complement these efforts, APP's Regenesis platform—established in September 2025—provides financial backing amounting to $30 million annually, specifically for conservation and restoration of one million hectares of critical ecosystems.

As part of its Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2030, APP Group continues to pioneer responsible sourcing while integrating sustainability into its business strategy. The company's engagement in PROTECT30 is a testament to its commitment to influencing positive environmental change while supporting local communities.

Conclusion

The PROTECT30 initiative exemplifies a pioneering approach to conservation, fostering a partnership model that prioritizes both biodiversity and community welfare. Through continued collaboration, innovative practices, and a strong commitment to sustainability, APP Group and its partners are laying the groundwork for a resilient and thriving ecological future in Sumatra's Bukit Tigapuluh region. This endeavor not only nourishes the environment but also aims to create a sustainable livelihood for the communities that depend on it, ensuring that nature and society thrive hand in hand.
