Addressing the Challenges of Sustainable Palm Oil: Fires, Exports, and Smallholders at RT2026

Addressing the Challenges of Sustainable Palm Oil: Insights from RT2026

The annual Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RT2026) recently took place in Indonesia, where critical discussions surrounding the sustainable palm oil sector occurred, addressing recent environmental challenges and the imperative inclusion of smallholder farmers. The event gathered prominent global stakeholders united by the aim of fostering an industry that upholds sustainability while navigating increasingly complex geopolitical circumstances.

In an era marked by one of the most intense El Niño episodes, Indonesia faced severe agricultural and forest fires, devastating over 1.9 million hectares from January to September 2026. This alarming crisis prompted RSPO's CEO, Joseph D'Cruz, to underline the organization’s commitment to transparency amid public scrutiny. During his address, he emphasized the proactive measures taken by RSPO members in firefighting efforts throughout regions like Sumatra and Kalimantan. He made a point to contrast the federal figures of burnt lands, highlighting that areas certified by RSPO experienced fire impacts significantly lower than the national average.

The satellite data shared by Dr. David Gaveau from TheTreeMap was alarming yet revealing: within the RSPO certified concessions, only approximately 14,500 hectares were reported burned, or about 0.8% of the total affected land in Indonesia. D'Cruz reiterated the RSPO's commitment to addressing behaviors within concessions showing unusual fire activity by conducting thorough investigations. Remarkably, the data indicated that no certified smallholder plots had experienced fires, dispelling concerns regarding their practices and sustainability claims.

Moreover, the conference underscored the importance of uniting efforts to protect sustainable practices against being overshadowed by the industry's less scrupulous operators. Facilitating discussions and leveraging existent data, D'Cruz urged RSPO members to vocally defend the integrity and achievements of sustainable palm oil production.
