Business Leaders Urge COP31 to Prioritize Clean Electrification and Heavy Industry Initiatives
Urgency of Clean Electrification in Climate Talks
In a powerful letter addressed to the COP31 presidency, more than 30 members of the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) have called for urgent action on clean electrification and the heavy industry sector. As climate negotiations approach, this plea underscores the need to address the impending threat of global warming that could reach 2.6°C by the year 2100 without proper policy intervention. The emphasis on clean electrification arises from recent analyses demonstrating its potential to significantly curb anticipated global temperature rise, with the study concluding that improving clean electrification could lower expected warming to approximately 2.3°C.
The Call to Action
The ETC urges COP31 leaders, including President Murat Kurum and Chris Bowen, to incorporate two primary priorities into their climate agenda. Firstly, they advocate for accelerating clean electrification, aiming for a target of 35% electrification by 2035, coupled with the development of national strategies to achieve this objective. Secondly, they stress the need for global collaboration in decarbonizing industries that are traditionally hard to electrify, such as steel and cement manufacturing, aviation, and shipping, primarily through carbon pricing mechanisms.
The letter aims to counter the growing narrative suggesting that the Paris Agreement goals, which seek to limit global warming well below 2°C, are unattainable. The study highlights that weakening climate commitments could severely undermine policies designed to combat climate change at a crucial moment when clean technologies are advancing rapidly. Conversely, bolstering commitments in clean electrification and addressing hard-to-electrify sectors could rekindle a
