Midea Enhances Global Presence in the Heating Pump Market with Optimism

Midea Expands Global Footprint in Heat Pump Industry

In a recent exclusive interview with JARN, a distinguished HVAC publication in Japan, Peter Guan, the Vice President of Midea Group and President of Midea Building Technologies (MBT), shared his insights on the evolving global heat pump market. Midea is strategically positioning itself to take advantage of optimistic growth forecasts in this sector.

Guan expressed enthusiasm for the growth prospects, particularly within the European market for air-to-water (ATW) heat pumps. He also cited exciting opportunities in North America and Australia, reflecting the strong global demand for sustainable heating solutions. Recognized as one of the ten innovative technologies of 2024 by MIT Technology Review, heat pump technology plays a crucial role in decreasing the world's dependency on fossil fuels and advancing carbon neutrality. Guan predicts that market recovery will be strongly influenced by technological advancements, supportive policies, and heightened consumer awareness in the next two years.

Europe: A Hub for Heat Pump Development

The European Union has introduced robust policies aimed at boosting heat pump adoption, including initiatives like the Net Zero Industry Act, which eases approval processes, provides financial support, and enhances workforce training. Countries such as Germany, France, and Poland have strengthened subsidy frameworks, which Guan believes will catalyze market recovery and growth. Additionally, the European Heat Pump Association's Accelerator Program aims to implement nearly 10 million heat pumps by 2029, with ATW heat pumps making up over 5 million units. The commercial heat pump market is projected to grow at an annual compound growth rate (CAGR) of 12%, potentially reaching €1.15 billion by 2028.

To capitalize on the growth potential, MBT has adopted various strategic measures for localized operations. By establishing a European R&D center, they focus on developing products tailored to local needs, ensuring adaptability to market demands. Collaborations with distributors have strengthened both online and offline marketing campaigns, raising consumer awareness of heat pump advantages in residential and commercial settings. Over the past two years, MBT has upgraded more than 700 heat pump displays in stores to enhance outreach.

Their active participation in industry events has also solidified MBT's market influence. At Chillventa 2024, MBT partnered with Trace Software to unveil Super Advisor, an energy management software tool integrated with photovoltaic systems, home battery storage, and heat pumps, achieving a remarkable energy self-sufficiency rate of 80-90%. This software significantly enhances the accuracy and profitability of home energy management solutions.

MBT also emphasizes workforce development, operating 32 training centers across European nations such as Italy, Germany, Hungary, and Poland to educate qualified installers. Furthermore, acquisitions like Clivet in 2016 have improved MBT's supply chain, supported by recent investments exceeding €60 million in new production and R&D facilities to foster future growth.

Expanding Reach in North America and Australia

Beyond Europe, MBT is amplifying its presence in North America and Australia. The International Energy Agency anticipates a growth of over 50% in the North American heat pump market by 2030, with U.S. shipments expected to rise by 25% in 2023. Similarly, Australia's heat pump usage is projected to increase by 40% by 2030 due to government initiatives like the National Climate Change Adaptation Framework.

MBT has tailored its offerings for these markets by introducing high-performance heat pumps and water heaters that cater to regional demands. By emphasizing technology, service differentiation, and post-sales support, MBT aims to strengthen its global competitive edge.

Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability

Investing 5% of its annual sales revenue in R&D ensures MBT maintains its innovative product leadership. The company operates six R&D centers and 93 training centers globally, enabling swift market responses while upholding service excellence. "The global heat pump industry is rapidly growing, backed by technological advancements and favorable policies," Guan stated. "As consumers increasingly prioritize sustainability, the industry offers substantial opportunities. Our strategic focus both in Europe and beyond positions us for transformative growth in this critical sector."
