Shining a Light on Sickle Cell: Community Actions for Awareness and Hope

As June 19 approaches, the date dedicated to World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, an inspiring initiative known as "Shine the Light on Sickle Cell" emerges once again. For the past seven years, this campaign mobilized a collective of 47 community organizations and medical providers across the Northeast United States, aiming to raise awareness about Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and advocate for a universal cure. With this year’s theme centered on illuminating communities, the campaign seeks to shine a powerful light on the experiences of those affected by this condition.

The Significance of June 19

World Sickle Cell Awareness Day was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008, emphasizing the need for improved awareness and treatment options for individuals living with SCD. This hereditary disorder primarily affects people of African and Caribbean descent and is marked by the distortion of red blood cells, leading to severe health complications. Currently, approximately 100,000 Americans deal with SCD, a number that highlights the urgent need for greater awareness and action.

A Growing Movement

The collaborative, known as SiNERGe (Sickle Cell Improvement in the Northeast Region through Education), has expanded its efforts significantly over the years. What started as a regional awareness initiative could now be seen as a national and international campaign that reaches various communities, including Atlanta and even London. The campaign is part of the Sickle Cell Disease Treatment Demonstration Project, supported by HRSA.

As part of the awareness efforts, several landmarks, stadiums, and public buildings will be illuminated in red, the color associated with sickle cell awareness. Some sites include iconic locations like the Bromo Seltzer Tower in Baltimore and the Cira Center in Philadelphia, reflecting a collective commitment to support sickle cell warriors.

Medical Insights and Challenges

Dr. Sophie Lanzkron, Director of the Division of Hematology – Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research at Thomas Jefferson University, noted the strides being made in the field of treatment. “With advances like gene therapy and bone marrow transplants, there is newfound hope for those living with sickle cell disease,” she stated. However, she also pointed out the existing barriers to accessing these transformative treatments—cost and the need for lifelong care remain significant challenges.

Community Engagement Activities

In the lead-up to June 19, various activities will take place across different states to engage local communities. Events scheduled include educational seminars, vigils, blood drives, and awareness walks, all aimed at providing insightful resources and support for those affected by SCD. Noteworthy activities include:
  • - June 13: A World Sickle Cell Day event at ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital, offering educational materials and support messages.
  • - June 14: The Shine the Light on Sickle Cell Awareness Gala, hosted by the Sickle Cell Advocates of Rochester.
  • - June 17: A virtual storytelling session named "Warrior Strong," organized by the T.H.R.I.V.E. Sickle Cell Disease initiative.
  • - June 19: Events coordinated during the World Sickle Cell Day Marathon by the Cayenne Wellness Center, alongside multiple local celebrations.

Mobilizing Resources, Uniting Voices

This year’s campaign sees strong participation from the Divine Nine, which includes historically African American sororities and fraternities like Phi Beta Sigma, Omega Psi Phi, and Sigma Gamma Rho. Their involvement is pivotal in harnessing diverse networks to amplify the message of sickle cell awareness.

In conclusion, it is vital that we join in this illuminating campaign by showing our support, whether by wearing red, participating in local events, or engaging in discussions around SCD. Together, we can make a profound difference in the lives of sickle cell warriors. Use the hashtag #ShineTheLightOnSickleCell2025 to join the conversation and spread hope.

Numerous community-based organizations and medical providers are playing an active role in this campaign.
