Shatterproof Walk to End Addiction Returns to Dallas
On November 14, 2026, the Shatterproof Walk to End Addiction will take place at The Sound in Dallas, Texas. This annual event aims to unite the community around the struggle against substance use disorders (SUD) while honoring those who have lost their lives and celebrating those who have successfully recovered. This year marks the 7th iteration of this meaningful event, which will draw hundreds of people, including families, friends, advocates, health leaders, and individuals who are themselves in recovery.
The Shatterproof Walk is part of a national series of events designed to bring attention and resources to the pressing issue of addiction in America. Despite a reported 15% decrease in drug overdose deaths in Dallas County in 2024, the ongoing struggles with substance misuse remain a significant concern. 529 people tragically lost their lives due to overdose, highlighting the urgent need for community action and support.
Pam Jenkins, CEO of Shatterproof, emphasized the positive steps being made: “Progress is possible, but too many families are still struggling to find the care and support they need. The Walk brings communities together to honor those we've lost, celebrate recovery, and remind every individual affected by addiction that they are not alone.”
The Unfolding Crisis
While Dallas has seen a decrease in overdose deaths, the rise in non-fatal opioid-related emergency responses tells a different story. In 2024 alone, emergency medical services reported 2,020 responses related to opioid overdoses, marking a 4% increase from the previous year. Alarmingly, opioids have been involved in 51% of overdose deaths in the county and in 31% of non-fatal emergencies. Fentanyl, a particularly potent opioid, is a leading factor in these concerning trends.
Addiction does not affect all communities equally. Men are nearly three times more likely to die from an overdose than women, and Black or African American residents have the highest overdose death rates across all groups. Adults aged 35 to 64 are also reported to have the highest rates, accentuating the urgent need for tailored community responses.
The Importance of Treatment and Public Support
Substance use disorders are alarmingly prevalent—around 1 in 7 individuals in Texas faced a substance use issue within the past year, yet approximately 75% of those people do not receive the necessary treatment. The state currently ranks poorly in the number of specialty treatment centers, with only 15 centers per 100,000 people, compared to the national average of 20. Furthermore, two-thirds of Texas adults do not recognize substance use disorder as a chronic medical condition, with many attributing it instead to moral failings.
Despite these challenges, a strong belief in the importance of treatment access persists among Texans. An overwhelming 89% feel that health insurance should cover substance use treatment, while 94% believe equal care should be provided to those with SUD. Additionally, 88% think employers should offer treatment opportunities for affected individuals.
