Earl 2025 Conference: Migration Shaping the Narrative
From October 17 to 19, 2025, the Pacific School of Religion (PSR) is set to host the Earl 2025 Conference, a hybrid event focusing on critical discussions surrounding migration. This year's theme, "Migration Shaping the Narrative," will explore how migration stories can restore power, challenge forgetfulness, and pave the way for a more equitable and compassionate future.
A Legacy of Dialogue
Established in 1901, the Earl Lectures have long served as a platform for addressing pressing theological, pastoral, and social issues. Over the decades, this series has featured a diverse range of thought leaders, artists, and activists, making it one of the longest-running lecture series in California. The discussions held at these conferences have played a crucial role in shaping public discourse on vital matters affecting our society.
The Earl 2025 Conference will begin with a distinguished alumni banquet on the opening night, setting the stage for a full day of lectures and workshops on Saturday. Notable speakers include prominent figures such as Luis Argueta, a Guatemalan filmmaker and human rights advocate; Cynthia T. Buiza, former Executive Director of the California Immigrant Policy Center; and José Luis Marantes, co-founder of the United We Dream Network.
Why Migration Matters Now More Than Ever
In an era marked by intense political tension surrounding immigration issues, PSR President Rev. Dr. David Vásquez-Levy emphasizes the immediate relevance of this year's theme. He states, "Migration is not just a political issue; it is a profoundly human story. In these tumultuous times, we must highlight the lived experiences of migrants and challenge the narratives that dehumanize them. The Earl Lectures provide a space for listening, learning, and community solidarity." This sentiment is more important than ever, as immigration debates continue to inflame public opinion and policy.
The weekend will culminate in a sermon delivered by Rev. Vásquez-Levy at the First Congregational Church of Berkeley on Sunday, October 19, adding a spiritual dimension to the engaging discussions.
