About Kan'eiji Temple
Kan'eiji is a principal temple of the Tendai sect, established in 1625 during the Edo period by Tenkai Daishi, who aimed to pray for the stability of the Tokugawa shogunate and the peace of the people. Initially built on the northeastern edge of Edo Castle, it later became the family temple for the Tokugawa shoguns and houses the mausoleums of some of Japan's most notable shoguns.
As a major temple that welcomed the imperial family during the Edo period, Kan'eiji holds a significant place in Japan's religious and cultural history, and it stands as a reminder of the 400 years of rich heritage that the temple holds as it approaches its anniversary in 2025.
