Advocacy Summit Focuses on Enhancing Liver Health and Patient Support

Advocacy for Liver Health

On April 21 and 22, 2026, the American Liver Foundation (ALF) will host the Liver Life Advocacy Summit™ in Washington, D.C. This significant event aims to gather patients, caregivers, and family members impacted by liver diseases, advocating for improvements in liver health and policies at the national level.

With nearly 100 million Americans facing liver disease, the ALF identifies an urgent need for enhanced federal investment in early diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Current spending on liver health is alarmingly lower compared to other chronic conditions, making advocacy efforts critical for meaningful change.

Objectives of the Summit

Advocacy plays a crucial role in pushing for legislation designed to protect and aid those affected by liver diseases. ALF aims to encourage lawmakers to adopt the following legislative priorities:
  • - Support Living Donors: Promote the Living Donor Protection Act to remove financial barriers for organ donors.
  • - Ensure Patient Access: Pass laws such as the Safe Step Act and the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act to enhance access to necessary treatments.
  • - Pediatric Screening: Advance initiatives like the Ian Kalvinskas Pediatric Liver Cancer Early Detection and Screening Act aimed at improving early diagnosis for children.
  • - CDC Initiatives: Urge the CDC to create a Public Health Action Plan focused on liver disease prevention and to allocate funding for education and awareness campaigns about metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).

Event Schedule

In preparation for meetings with legislators, advocates will be trained on advocacy strategies and policy information at an educational session planned for April 21st. The day will conclude with a Welcome Dinner, featuring a keynote speech by Dr. Udeme Ekong from Medstar Health, who is also an ALF Board Member.

The following day, advocates will proceed to Capitol Hill to present their case to various lawmakers, emphasizing the importance of enhancing liver health initiatives among other health priorities.

ALF will also hold a Congressional dinner to honor exceptional contributors like Congressman Don Bacon (R-NE) and Congressman Jim Costa (D-CA) for their relentless support in advocating for liver health. During this event, two dedicated advocates will also be recognized for their volunteer efforts towards advancing liver health.
