Sinopec and Global Partners Unite to Boost CCUS Collaboration



In a groundbreaking initiative, Sinopec, or China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, has joined forces with international organizations, including the International CCUS Technology Innovation Cooperation Organization and the Kazakh Ministry of Energy, to advance collaborative efforts in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. Announced during the International CCUS Technology Conference held on September 1-2 in Astana, Kazakhstan, this initiative aims to foster close cooperation regarding CCUS technologies and standards, as well as to enhance interaction among CCUS professionals worldwide.

Over 230 participants from various nations, including China, Kazakhstan, the UK, the USA, and Canada, attended the conference. This event provided a significant platform for discussing vital topics such as carbon dioxide capture, geological storage, CO₂ mineralization, and the development of CCUS hubs. Additionally, attendees analyzed economic models, policy frameworks, and necessary international partnerships to promote large-scale deployment of these essential technologies.

Tian Hongbin, Sinopec's vice president, emphasized the critical phase of global climate action, underscoring CCUS as a pivotal technology in this transition. He stated that Sinopec, having contributed to the founding of the ICTO, will continue to support its evolution into a premier global network for top experts and to fortify international collaboration in the CCUS arena.

Sinopec has already made significant strides in this field, having constructed China's first dense-phase CO₂ pipeline, spanning 100 kilometers. Furthermore, they have implemented the country's inaugural integrated CCUS demonstration project, capable of sequestering one million metric tons of CO₂ annually. The company is additionally engaged in a joint study with industry giants such as Shell, BASF, and China Baowu, focused on establishing the first open-access CCUS hub in China, which aims for a capacity of 10 million metric tons. Another exciting project includes a demonstration setup intended to manage one million metric tons of CO₂ from the Shengli oil field, focusing on utilizing low-concentration CO₂ sources.

Launched in July 2025, the ICTO comprises 60 founding members, encompassing companies, research institutes, and experts from over 20 countries and regions. Sinopec's ongoing collaboration with ICTO and other members is aimed at bridging engineering expertise with global research efforts, facilitating the advancement and implementation of CCUS technologies.
