Okayama University Showcases Enthusiastic STEM Engagement at Children's University Event

Okayama University Engages Youth at Children's University Event

On May 31, 2026, Okayama University's General Technology Department participated in the 14th edition of the "Children's University in Okayama Shoka University" event, held in Okayama City. Under the auspices of the Okayama University Consortium, this gathering brought together 1,075 participants, including 573 children and 502 adults from 15 universities in the Okayama Prefecture.

The primary goal of this beloved event is to deepen the connection between the public and universities through various interactive booths that cover topics like experimentation, crafting, culinary education, languages, and medicine, making the learning experience enjoyable and engaging for attendees of all ages.

The General Technology Department offered two main activities during the event. In the morning, they featured a popular workshop called "Create a Sparkling Kaleidoscope with PET Bottles," where 109 children participated. Due to the high demand, participants had to wait in line for tickets, which quickly ran out. To ensure safety, each group of 2 to 3 children was supervised by 1 to 2 staff members. The use of specially designed tools, including 3D-printed devices, enabled even younger children to successfully craft their kaleidoscopes. Participants excitedly showcased their creations to siblings and parents, filling the area with cheers and applause for their unique designs.

In the afternoon, the event transitioned to a more challenging theme titled "Building Polyhedra with Straws." Although this activity proved to be a bit complex for younger attendees, it encouraged collaboration among parents and technical staff, fostering a spirit of perseverance as they helped children create octahedrons and tetrahedrons. The task of threading rubber through notched straws was challenging, but the participants celebrated their success with enthusiastic applause upon completion.

Sato Norihito, the Deputy Director and Vice President in charge of research and industry-academia collaboration at the General Technology Department, expressed his gratitude: "We are thankful for the opportunity to participate again this year. Our technical staff possesses high skills and the ability to communicate science with a writer's flair. We look forward to continuing to deliver exciting scientific experiences to children."

The General Technology Department is committed to regional contributions and science outreach activities, working in tandem with the Faculty of Engineering of Okayama University. Their initiatives extend beyond the campus, aiming to engage children in science through enjoyable and relatable themes. As a prominent research university, Okayama University continues to serve as a community hub, enhancing its contributions to education and scientific literacy.

As the event demonstrated, engaging the next generation in science is paramount; hence, the General Technology Department is eager to maintain its role in nurturing future scientists and innovators. Keep an eye on the exciting future activities from Okayama University and its General Technology Department, as they pave the way for impactful education in the field of STEM.
