Chelsey Goodan's Inspiring Journey in Women's Healing in Hangzhou, China

In a significant cross-cultural collaboration, Chelsey Goodan, a renowned adolescent education expert from the United States, traveled to Hangzhou, China, from August 21 to 23, 2026. Invited by Zhang Xinyuan, founder of Vimi Wellness, Goodan facilitated a workshop aimed at mother-daughter relationships titled 'Healing the Inner Girl,' marking her first venture into China. The workshop attracted nearly twenty participants, encouraging both mothers and daughters to explore the complex dynamics of their relationships.

Goodan, who has spent 18 years working with adolescent girls, gained prominence with her bestseller, 'Underestimated: The Wisdom and Power of Teenage Girls,' which received accolades from reputable sources including Amazon and was praised by Academy Award-winning actress Laura Dern. Goodan's teaching philosophy emphasizes empowerment, urging teenagers to recognize their value and navigate the challenges of growing up.

On the other hand, Zhang Xinyuan brings her own extensive expertise to the partnership, as she has dedicated 17 years to women's health and intimate relationships. She holds a postgraduate research certification from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in the U.S. and has a considerable following on Chinese social media, with over 5 million fans. She operates two women’s health specialty centers and holds 25 national patents, which reflects her commitment to advancing women’s health in China.

The synergy of their expertise formed the foundation for a month-long online book club initiated by Zhang in July, which guided numerous families in exploring Goodan's work. The sessions sparked profound discussions, prompting parents to reflect on their relationships with their daughters. Many recognized their roles in shaping their daughters' self-perception, leading some to sentimentally state, 'The problem was never my child — it was me.' This dialogue set the stage for in-person workshops in Hangzhou, allowing deeper engagement between families.

The workshop consisted of several stages designed to foster psychological safety, body autonomy, and effective communication. Goodan commenced the sessions by addressing the prevalence of stress among teenage girls, highlighting that 74% encounter significant pressure. She guided participants in identifying and naming their inner critics, separating these negative voices from their true identities.

Body image, a significant concern for adolescents, was another focus. Goodan underscored that by the age of ten, 81% of girls begin to experience body image distress. In an innovative exercise, participants wrote negative labels imposed on their bodies and placed them on one model, while writing affirming remarks about body parts they loved on another. This collective activity served as a powerful acknowledgment of body autonomy and self-acceptance.

Communication was another pivotal area tackled during the workshop. Goodan trained mother-daughter pairs to engage in 'reflective listening,' where mothers reiterated their daughters' sentiments, offering validation and understanding. Phrases like 'I know this disappointed you' and 'Your feelings are completely understandable' fostered genuine connections, allowing many participants to hear each other fully for the first time.

An impactful segment involved Zhang, who shared her past labels of 'disobedient' and 'ambitious.' Goodan affirmed that such traits were avenues of strength leading to success. Participants learned to view 'disobedience' not as a flaw but as a unique aspect of their identities.

At the workshop’s conclusion, both mothers and daughters expressed profound sentiments of validation and connection. One daughter noted feeling 'seen' for the first time, while a mother realized that the path to healing began with her own introspection. Goodan emphasized that nurturing one's inner girl is a valuable gift one can give to their daughter, imparting an approach to healing that resonates within both cultures.

This historic collaboration not only marks Goodan’s introduction to China but signifies a new chapter in cross-cultural dialogue regarding women’s empowerment and mental health. It bridges Goodan’s Western philosophies of amplifying women’s voices with Zhang’s sustainable practices rooted in Chinese culture.

Through Vimi Wellness, they aim to introduce innovative psychological healing concepts in China, integrating them with localized health-care systems to craft a comprehensive healing framework addressing both psychological and physiological aspects. This initiative nurtures the well-being of women, presenting them with the tools to reclaim their self-worth and embrace their authenticity unapologetically. The partnership exemplifies the potency of collaborative healing across diverse cultural landscapes, inspiring future endeavors in the fields of education and women's wellness.
