Con Edison Transforms School Transportation in the Bronx

Con Edison, a major utility company, has taken a significant step toward greener transportation by energizing the largest fleet of electric school buses in New York State. This initiative is not just about reducing greenhouse gas emissions; it's about providing healthier air quality in areas like the South Bronx, where childhood asthma rates are alarmingly higher than the national average.

The company has partnered with GVC, a family-operated school bus service with over three decades of experience in transporting children with special needs. Together, they have introduced 45 electric buses and installed 23 dual-port chargers to facilitate this transition from traditional fossil fuel-powered buses.

Addressing Environmental Justice

Michael Townsend, the Compliance Officer at GVC, emphasized the importance of this change. "The children we transport are specifically vulnerable to air pollution and noise. Switching our fleet to electric is improving lives and contributing to cleaner air for everyone in the area," he stated.
Con Edison's efforts extend beyond electrifying buses. The utility is working with the New York State Public Service Commission to upgrade infrastructure in Zerega Avenue and Hunts Point. These upgrades aim to facilitate faster electrification and support other heavy-duty vehicles, effectively reducing toxic tailpipe emissions across the region.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson highlighted the borough's pivotal role in New York's future by stating that the Bronx is not only vital for the city’s mobility but also instrumental in shaping sustainable transportation for future generations.

A Cleaner Future for Children

Electric buses are a game-changer. Unlike their diesel counterparts, they produce no tailpipe emissions, eliminating harmful particles like carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides which contribute to respiratory issues. According to estimates, the new fleet will prevent the release of approximately one million pounds of carbon annually, equivalent to the emissions generated by burning 3,800 barrels of oil.

State Senator Nathalia Fernandez pointed out that these advances are not just beneficial for public health but also have the potential to create job opportunities within the clean energy sector. "Every child deserves clean air, and these investments foster health, economic stability, and environmental justice,” she noted.

Alexis Hidalgo, a Policy Advisor from the Mayor's Office of Climate and Environmental Justice, affirmed that this project is exceptionally crucial in communities disproportionately affected by pollution. He emphasized that by moving forward with the largest electrification project in the state, the initiative directly aligns with the City’s climate goals and enhances the well-being of all residents.

Health Benefits Supported by Science

Dr. Michelle Glick, an asthma specialist, reinforced the link between air quality and health, particularly for the Bronx, which has the highest rates of asthma in New York City. "Reducing harmful pollutants will lead to healthier neighborhoods," she stated, underscoring that cleaner air creates a better living environment and educational experience for children.

Con Edison has also financially supported GVC through its MHD Make-Ready Pilot program, offering grants that help defray the costs of infrastructure needed for the new electric bus fleet. This program, in partnership with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), has facilitated significant developments in both electrification and infrastructure for GVC.

Community Impact

With these electric buses, about 800 students will enjoy safer and quieter rides to school, with GVC averaging around 4,100 trips every week. Christian Martinez, a driver with GVC, shared the positive shift in experience, noting that the quiet and clean environment significantly benefits children, especially those with special needs such as autism.
