Matrix Renewables, a rising player in the renewable energy sector, has recently signed a pivotal Full Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) agreement with Tesla. This collaboration is set to revolutionize the energy landscape in the UK, as it aims to establish a 500 MW / 2-hour (1 GWh) standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Eccles, Scotland.
The project stands as Matrix Renewables' inaugural standalone BESS project in the UK, significantly supporting the UK government’s Net Zero 2050 target and Clean Power 2035 ambition. Sergio Arbeláez, Managing Director for Europe and Latam at Matrix Renewables, commented on the initiative, stating that they are delivering the necessary infrastructure to facilitate a transition to a clean, secure, and resilient power system. This move is essential for the UK’s energy future and showcases the company's ability to manage complex, utility-scale storage projects through effective partnerships and a long-term vision.
All necessary planning conditions for the project have been fulfilled, with full consent obtained for construction to commence. Positioned strategically along critical transmission corridors that connect Scotland to England, this BESS project will enhance grid flexibility, promote greater renewable integration, and bolster system resilience—all of which are vital components in modern energy systems.
Mike Snyder, Energy Vice President at Tesla, expressed excitement regarding this partnership, highlighting Tesla's robust market experience that combined with Matrix Renewables' unique expertise, sets the stage for a successful project execution.
To ensure the highest technical standards throughout the project lifecycle, Matrix is supported by a top-tier advisory team. Enertis leads the technical due diligence, GHD serves as the Technical Advisor, and Black & Veatch acts as the Owner’s Engineer, collectively guaranteeing that the delivery meets industry-leading standards.
Moreover, in alignment with its commitment to social responsibility, Matrix Renewables has forged a collaboration agreement with the local Community Council. This partnership aims to implement joint initiatives that will deliver long-term benefits to the communities surrounding the project site.
