Rising Heat Risks and Air Conditioning Stress in Households
As temperatures continue to soar during the summer months, a recent survey conducted by Mitsubishi Estate Home Co., Ltd. sheds light on the growing concerns associated with air conditioning use in households. The survey focused on households with children and elderly family members and investigates the risks of heat stress related to air conditioning systems.
Background of the Survey
The survey, conducted online by PRIZMA from August 14 to 15, 2025, included responses from 1,025 participants aged between their 30s and 60s. The primary aim was to explore the relationship between heatstroke risks within homes and the stress induced by air conditioning use. In a climate where heat-related illnesses are becoming more common—even within the confines of our homes—understanding how households cope with these conditions is crucial.
Findings on Air Conditioning Use
One of the most striking findings indicates that over 50% of respondents keep their air conditioning running continuously, with 63.8% of those who turn it off admitting that the cost of electricity is a significant concern. While air conditioning is essential for comfort, the financial implications and health concerns related to air conditioning use cannot be overlooked.
The survey revealed that approximately 60% of respondents reported dissatisfaction with where the air conditioning’s cooling effect reaches, predominantly due to temperature inconsistency across different areas of the house. About 48.9% of people felt that their living room was particularly hot, followed by bedrooms and toilets. Notably, areas like toilets and bathrooms, where the air conditioner's reach is minimal, pose significant health risks, especially for vulnerable individuals.
Issues of Comfort and Health
The dissatisfaction didn't merely stem from discomfort; it also highlighted the increasing need for better temperature control. When asked about their biggest complaints regarding air conditioning, nearly 24.8% said they struggled with dryness affecting their skin and throat, while 24.4% noted issues with the temperature being too cold while sleeping.
This gap between expected comfort and actual experience illustrates a larger trend: many families seek a balance between energy efficiency and comfort. Notably, 90% of respondents expressed a desire for air conditioning systems that avoid direct cool air exposure while ensuring a consistent temperature throughout the room.
Coping Mechanisms
Despite these challenges, families are adapting by utilizing alternative cooling methods. When asked how they deal with areas lacking air conditioning, 39.4% of respondents reported using portable fans or standing fans, showcasing a preference for less energy-intensive solutions. However, around 32.9% of respondents reported that they did not take any specific measures, likely due to the short duration of their stay in such areas or concerns about costs and installation efforts.
Interestingly, 80% of participants felt they were adequately prepared for heat stress at home, largely due to these proactive measures. This positive self-evaluation underscores that even small adjustments can provide a sense of security in combating heat-related risks.
Conclusion: Meeting the Demand for Comfort and Energy Efficiency
This survey highlights a critical need in modern households: while air conditioning is seen as a necessary tool for comfort, families are struggling with issues of efficacy, cost, and health implications related to comfort levels. The findings suggest a pressing demand for innovative air conditioning solutions that effectively balance comfort with energy efficiency.
