Inoka Launches Educational Program 'Tanbo Lab' to Connect Kids with Nature

Inoka's Innovative 'Tanbo Lab' Program

Inoka, a Tokyo-based company specializing in environmental technology, has partnered with Kanuma City in Tochigi Prefecture to launch the educational program 'Tanbo Lab' starting in July 2026. This unique initiative aims to engage children in exploring the themes of nature and ecology through hands-on experiences at local rice paddies. The program addresses the urgent issue of declining rice paddy areas in Japan, which have decreased by approximately 15% over the past 30 years.

Background of the Initiative

Japan faces a significant loss of rice paddies, a crucial part of its ecosystem, particularly in rural areas like Kanuma City. The city is home to endangered species such as the Tokyo salamander and the Buddha's hand loach, yet children's exposure to these natural environments has been drastically reduced. Studies indicate that the percentage of children experiencing nature firsthand, such as insect collecting, has plummeted from around 90% to less than 60%. Moreover, up to 40% of children have never participated in basic outdoor activities like camping. This alarming trend highlights the need for structured programs like 'Tanbo Lab.'

Inoka seeks to combat this issue by utilizing its expertise gained from marine research, particularly in coral ecosystems, and localizing it to rice paddy environments. By doing so, the company aims to redefine the educational value of local nature and engage children in 'edu-tainment'—a blend of education and entertainment.

Program Features: A Structured Inquiry Process

Children participating in 'Tanbo Lab' will take on the role of apprentice researchers within the 'Secret Research Institute of Inoka.' Unlike mere observation, this program encourages kids to develop their questions, formulate hypotheses, collect data, and present their findings—all within a structured experiential learning framework.

Session Date Objective
----------
1 July 11 Fieldwork: Explore 'Why?' in Kanuma Discover nature's mysteries often overlooked by adults at rice paddies and a waste management facility to cultivate questioning skills.
2 July 18 Strategy Meeting: Formulate Hypotheses Develop predictions (hypotheses) based on observations and brainstorm methods for evidence collection.
3 August 8 Data Analysis: Summarize Findings Organize summer research results with professional insights to derive fact-based logical interpretations.
4 August 23 Presentation: Share Discoveries Present findings at the ‘Kanuma Environmental Exploration Society’ in front of the mayor and experts, receiving certification as a 'Certified Researcher.'

Comments from Stakeholders

Masashi Matsui, Mayor of Kanuma City

"Kanuma is blessed with rich nature, with approximately 70% of its area covered in forests and home to clear streams like the Ooshi River. It's our crucial mission to pass on this wonderful natural environment to the next generation. This collaboration with Inoka, which combines cutting-edge knowledge of aquatic life with our municipal expertise in waste management, opens new doors in environmental education. This practical program will help children learn about our rivers' ecosystems and waste challenges utilizing their senses while fostering a sense of belonging to their hometown. I am excited about the potential leaders for future environmental activities rising from Kanuma through this venture."

Naoki Masuda, CAO of Inoka

"Kanuma holds a special place in my heart, as I spent my childhood here, exploring rice paddies and interacting with wildlife. My grandfather, a science teacher, inspired my passion for living creatures through his mentorship during my formative research experiences. 'Rice paddies' embody Japan's natural heritage, yet their value is often overlooked amid their decline. This initiative will leverage Inoka's marine exploration expertise to redefine local nature as a rich exploration ground. Through this program, children will develop a profound attachment to their environment and critical thinking skills. Our public-private collaboration aims to maximize the value of natural capital and foster a sustainable future where nature and the economy thrive together."

Future Development: Transforming Natural Capital into Local Power

Inoka plans to expand this collaborative model from Kanuma City to municipalities nationwide, aiming to redefine the educational programs surrounding natural value. By transforming local natural assets into educational content, the initiative seeks to curb youth outmigration, foster civic pride, and aid in regional branding while striving for a sustainable society where nature and the economy flourish.
