AARP New York's 'Staycation' Campaign Encourages Local Exploration Amid Rising Costs

AARP New York's 'Staycation' Campaign

As the costs of living continue to rise, many New Yorkers aged 50 and above are feeling the pinch. Rising utility bills, caregiving expenses, and general increased prices have made traveling further away seem more daunting and out of reach. In response, AARP New York has unveiled its 'Staycation' campaign, aimed at encouraging residents to explore the hidden gems their local communities have to offer, all while spending less.

AARP New York recognizes that families are tightening their budgets, which leads them to seek affordable entertainment and activities without the need to travel far. The Staycation campaign aims not only to provide resources for fun and educational experiences but also to foster connections among community members.

The level of engagement promoted by AARP includes free downloadable postcards featuring iconic sites from New York City's five boroughs as well as attractions in upstate New York. The campaign highlights the state's rich cultural heritage, coinciding with the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations.

Beth Finkel, the State Director of AARP New York, emphasizes that the mission extends beyond helping individuals find budget-friendly activities. It’s about creating opportunities for connection, memory-making, and celebrating local culture. As Finkel notes, "There's nothing quite like the experience of being a New Yorker. At a time when New Yorkers are watching every dollar...we wanted to showcase great experiences right in our own backyard."

AARP volunteer Teri Hatred from Islip adds to the excitement, saying, "The Staycation campaign is a great invitation to rediscover New York. It highlights the incredible range of experiences available... and encourages people to explore places they might never have considered before."

One notable feature of the campaign is the 'Movies Turning 50' series, which invites AARP members and their guests to enjoy classic films for free. There are events scheduled throughout the fall, highlighting films such as Taxi Driver, Carrie, A Star is Born, and Network. Each of these movie nights includes free tickets, popcorn, and soda.
