California Climate Credit Offers Significant Summer Savings for PG&E Customers
In a significant move to support its customers during the sweltering summer months, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has announced that millions of residential customers will benefit from California Climate Credits applied to their energy bills.
The initiative will see $72.36 in credits issued to customers over August and September, with individual monthly credits of $36.18 per month. This allocation comes as part of a broader strategy by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to enhance the affordability of energy costs during periods of higher demand, particularly in the summer when cooling needs spike.
"We have adjusted the timing of the California Climate Credit to better assist families as they navigate seasonal energy bill increases," shared Vincent Davis, PG&E's Chief Customer Officer. This move reflects legislative actions aimed at ensuring the state's residents can effectively manage their energy expenditures while promoting a transition to cleaner energy.
The California Climate Credit is derived from the state's Cap-and-Invest Program, which aims at reducing carbon emissions through a comprehensive regulatory framework. Thus far, the credits have proven beneficial; since the program's inception in 2014, PG&E customers have collectively saved nearly $1,200 each through these credits, resulting in aggregated savings of close to $15.2 billion statewide.
It's also worth noting that in addition to the climate credits, PG&E has recently lowered electricity rates for residential customers for the fifth time since January 2024. This adjustment brings down monthly bills by approximately $25 compared to two years prior, further cushioning households against rising energy costs.
