Yaoyoro Juku's Educational Event at Yasukuni Shrine
On August 9, 2023, Yaoyoro Juku organized an official worship ceremony and a lecture at Yasukuni Shrine, engaging participants in a meaningful exploration of Japan's history and spirituality. Known for its annual ceremonies, this year’s event continued the tradition and notably featured new speaker Saito Ten, alongside Toki Soichiro. The day sought to deepen understanding of respect toward Japan’s ancestors and the principles of historical consciousness.
The event took place as part of an online summer course, allowing participants nationwide to join via Zoom, thus creating an inclusive learning platform. Attendees first gathered at Yasukuni Shrine for the official worship, dressed in formal attire, under the guidance of shrine officials, to pay their respects to the souls of the honored spirits. The atmosphere was solemn as individuals prayed and reflected upon Japan's history and the value of peace—it was a moment of both reverence and contemplation.
Morning Session: Saito Ten’s Lecture
The morning began with Saito Ten’s lecture centered on the theme of “being human” and the importance of cultivating respect. Dressed in traditional attire, reminiscent of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony, Saito emphasized a personal approach over rigid formalities. He encouraged attendees to reflect on how they want to manifest respect toward others.
During the lecture, participants engaged in pair work, discussing critical themes such as “living” and “family,” fostering in-depth conversation. Saito incorporated teachings from the Confucian text “The Great Learning,” emphasizing the significance of nurturing the heart and the essence of learning in personal growth.
Afternoon Session: Toki Soichiro’s Lecture
The afternoon was highlighted by Toki Soichiro’s presentation, which delved into the essence of the term “Eirei,” or honored spirits, and the respect owed to ancestors who dedicated their lives for the well-being of their families and the nation. Toki illustrated the meaning behind the kanji for “Keii” (経緯)—vertical and horizontal threads—linking this concept to a deeper understanding of history and the importance of context in showing respect and love.
He utilized various engaging aids, including illustrations from manga, making complex historical concepts accessible and relatable for all attendees. This blend of education and cultural appreciation succeeded in stirring interest and understanding among participants, making history feel relevant and personal.
Reflection and Future Prospects
The event concluded successfully with a remarkable turnout, reinforcing Yaoyoro Juku’s commitment to enhancing the understanding of Japan’s heritage, mythology, and shrine culture. Looking ahead, the organization plans to continue hosting a series of events and courses designed to deepen cultural knowledge and appreciation.
For those eager to learn more, Yaoyoro Juku is set to expand its offerings including diagnostic content and additional online courses, ensuring that the rich tapestry of Japan's spiritual culture and historical nuances remain accessible. This learning experience is not just about visiting shrines but immersing oneself in Japan's profound history and spirit.
