Celebrating Ukrainian Independence Day in Chicago
This year, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas has planned a significant celebration for Ukrainian Independence Day, emphasizing the rich cultural heritage of the Ukrainian community in Chicago. The event is set to occur immediately after the traditional flag-raising ceremony at Daley Plaza, which will take place at noon on August 24, an annual observance honoring Ukraine's declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
Following the flag-raising, attendees are invited to a special reception at the County Building, located just a short walk from Daley Plaza. The reception will commence around 1 p.m., welcoming members of the public to join in the festivities. This gathering aims not just to celebrate a national holiday but to appreciate the invaluable contributions of the approximately 70,000 Ukrainians who reside in the Chicagoland area.
Treasure Pappas expressed, "Ukrainian Independence Day represents an opportunity to honor the remarkable history and culture of Ukrainian Americans, who have profoundly impacted Cook County through their dedication to community service, entrepreneurship, and familial values. This day symbolizes their resilience and determination, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with them in recognition of their legacy."
The reception will include presentations of Certificates of Excellence to several key figures within the Ukrainian community, acknowledging their contributions and achievements. Among those being honored are leaders from local Ukrainian churches, educators, and community activists, each of whom has played a significant role in enriching the cultural landscape of Cook County.
Notable honorees include:
- - Rev. Volodymyr Kushnir, pastor of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Church
- - Rev. Ivan Lymar from St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral
- - Olena Smolenec, art manager and curator at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art
- - Andriy Chuyko, music administrator, and educator at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral
These individuals symbolize the strength of the Ukrainian American community and are reflective of the diverse contributions that uphold the community's vibrancy.
Ukrainian Independence Day is not only about recognizing Ukraine's freedom and sovereignty, but it also celebrates the cultural identity that the Ukrainian community has fostered far from their homeland. With activities that include traditional music performances and various cultural displays, the reception alongside the flag-raising ceremony embodies the spirit of unity and support, showcasing Chicago's rich tapestry of cultures.
This year’s celebrations provide an important opportunity for both the Ukrainian and broader communities in Chicago to come together in a show of solidarity and respect for the values of freedom and democracy. By honoring those who have made lasting impacts, the event stands as a testament to the ongoing strength and spirit of the Ukrainian people both locally and globally. In a time when cultural recognition and appreciation is crucial, Treasurer Pappas's reception shines a light on the vibrant heritage of Ukrainian Americans and fosters a deeper understanding of their journey and achievements.
Join us this August 24 in celebrating not only the independence of a proud nation but also the thriving community that has made Chicago its home. Together, we can appreciate the contributions that each individual brings, reinforcing our collective commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and mutual respect.
