Health Advocates Launch #WearSunscreen Campaign to Promote Daily Skin Safety Awareness

Health Advocates Unite for the #WearSunscreen Campaign

On April 7, the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) unveiled the #WearSunscreen campaign in honor of World Health Day, emphasizing the critical need for sun safety practices throughout the year. With alarming statistics indicating that many Americans only apply sunscreen during the summer months, this initiative seeks to change perceptions and encourage daily use, regardless of the season or weather conditions.

The Need for Increased Awareness

In the United States, skin cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer, affecting more than five million individuals annually. Particularly concerning is melanoma, a severe form of skin cancer that is not only one of the deadliest but also highly preventable. The American Academy of Dermatology predicts roughly 200,000 new cases of melanoma yearly, with an estimated 20 fatalities occurring daily due to the disease.

Dr. Jane Yoo, a respected dermatologist, highlights the importance of integrating sunscreen into daily routines: "Just like brushing your teeth or buckling your seatbelt, sunscreen should be a consistent part of your daily health regimen. Regular use can halve the risk of squamous cell carcinoma and reduce melanomas by approximately 40 percent.”

Expert Guidance and Effective Solutions

FDA-approved sunscreens—whether mineral or chemical—are proven protective agents against sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancers when used as directed. A variety of formulations meeting high scientific standards are readily available, ensuring consumers have access to effective products. Tom Myers, President & CEO of PCPC, notes, "Despite years of proven efficacy, recent statistics project a rise in skin cancer cases. By collaborating with the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) and the Health In Hand Foundation, we aim to enhance understanding and encourage everyday sunscreen use.”

Spreading the Message

The #WearSunscreen campaign encourages public engagement via social media. Participants are invited to share their personal sun safety practices or tell others why sunscreen is vital, tagging friends and family using the campaign's hashtag. CHPA’s President & CEO, Scott Melville, emphasizes the campaign's goal: “We want to shift the perception of sunscreen from a summer accessory to an essential everyday item.”

Alongside the campaign, robust resources like factual information, expert advice, and free materials are being disseminated through print, broadcast, and various social media platforms. Collaboration with influencers, health professionals, advocacy groups, and retailers further amplifies this crucial message.

Take Action for Your Skin

The campaign's overarching message is clear: Protecting your skin with sunscreen is imperative for reducing skin cancer risk. For more details, educational resources, and tips on sun safety, interested individuals can visit PCPC’s sunscreen section.
