Discover the Unique KOGEI Academy Workshop
Citizen Watch Co., Ltd., based in Nishitokyo, Tokyo, is making waves with its ambitious initiative aimed at supporting the next generation of artisans in traditional crafts. Known as the “Z Generation KOGEI ARTIST Support Project,” this initiative seeks to trace the roots of Japan’s rich traditional craftsmanship and ensure its survival through the years.
From October 6th to 7th, 2025, Citizen will host the intriguing “Light and Time KOGEI Academy” workshop at its Citizen Museum, located on its company premises. This free event will feature notable artisans such as ceramic artist Moe Kanaeda and dye artist Yuuma Ishii as instructors, guiding participants through a hands-on learning experience about traditional crafts that integrate elements from watchmaking.

The schedule for the workshop spans two days:

Participants will gain insights into craft techniques directly from expert artisans and are encouraged to delve into Citizen’s historical timeline regarding watchmaking. The Citizen Museum, typically not open to the public, offers a unique location that enriches the overall experience.
The Artisans Behind the Workshop
Moe Kanaeda, born in Tokyo in 1997, utilizes traditional ceramic techniques known as “Nerikomi.” She focuses her artistic vision on producing exquisite pieces using a palette centered around blue. Since graduating from Musashino Art University in 2020, she has garnered accolades, including being a finalist for the New Artist Encouragement Award at the Nihon Dentou Kogei Kinki-ten. She has participated in several exhibitions, showcasing her work in prestigious venues like Takashimaya Art Salon in Kyoto.
Yuuma Ishii, born in 2001 in Fukushima, specializes in hand-painted Yuzen techniques, aiming to confront and represent his fundamental feelings through dyeing. He is currently enrolled in a Master's program at Kanazawa College of Art after completing his undergraduate studies. He has been recognized in various art exhibitions and has participated actively in resident programs that challenge traditional artistry.
How to Participate
Those interested in participating must be aged 18 or older and reside in Japan. The workshops are exclusively for individuals and do not permit the accompaniment of children. The lottery system will determine attendance if the number of applicants exceeds capacity – with approximately 15 spots available for the first workshop and 10 for the second.
Interested participants can find required documents and submit an application via the dedicated workshop application site between August 28, 2025, and September 14, 2025.
