Natsume Perseum: A Unique Literary Museum in Kumamoto
Kumamoto is set to welcome a remarkable addition to its cultural scene with the opening of the Natsume Perseum on February 11, 2026. This innovative literary museum, fully produced by Hiraku Inc., aims to celebrate the renowned author Natsume Soseki by focusing not just on his works, but on the man himself.
The concept of Natsume Perseum comes under the intriguing tagline of “A Literary Museum Entranced by Personality.” This unique establishment will offer visitors intimate insights into Soseki’s character, exploring his connection to Kumamoto where he taught English at Gokō High School (now Kumamoto University) for over four years. As it coincides with the 130th anniversary of Soseki’s visit to Kumamoto, the timing of the museum's launch could not be more perfect. The museum's site is also historically significant, built on the former residence of Natsume Soseki, thereby deepening the historical ties between the writer and the region.
Visitors can look forward to engaging exhibits that unveil fascinating episodes of Soseki's life, complemented by original displays of contemporary interpretations of his works, including a new translation of
Kusamakura (草枕) penned by popular modern authors. In an exciting twist, attendees will have the chance to engage with AI technology that simulates conversations with Soseki himself in a feature titled “Listen Up! Natsume-sensei.” These experiences are crafted to cater to literature lovers and newcomers alike, ultimately transforming the museum into a vibrant hub for culture in Kumamoto.
Hiraku Inc. has undertaken comprehensive project management for Natsume Perseum, overseeing everything from conceptual design to creative direction and the development of exclusive merchandise. This endeavor is part of a larger rebranding effort that includes the nearby
HOTEL TAU, KUMAMOTO. The hotel, having reopened in October 2022, will serve as a convenient lodging option for museum-goers, and also features a tourist information section at the museum entrance, aiming to carve out a new landmark for visitors exploring Kumamoto.
This exciting venture represents a public-private partnership under Japan’s “Local 10,000 Project,” initiated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to foster regional economic development. Natsume Perseum is proud to be the first project accepted within Kumamoto city, indicating the potential for vibrant local businesses to thrive.
