China's Sinopec Breaks Vertical Well Depth Record with 5,300 Meters Achievement

Sinopec's Groundbreaking Milestone in Shale Gas Exploration

China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation, widely known as Sinopec, has set a new benchmark in the gas exploration sector by achieving a remarkable vertical well depth of 5,300 meters. This significant development is part of its ambitious project, Deep Earth - Sichuan and Chongqing Natural Gas Base, which aims to enhance the efficiency of shale gas production in China. The Tiebei 1HF well, upon testing, delivered an impressive daily output of 314,500 cubic meters of industrial gas, demonstrating the well's capability and the strategic importance of the gas resources in the Puguang region.

The Puguang gas field, which has been successfully developed for over two decades, is notable for being China's first large-scale high-sulfur deep gas reservoir. The recent achievements in drilling at such unprecedented depths highlight Sinopec's commitment to exploring new energy resources and maintaining a stable long-term gas supply through advanced techniques and technology. Sinopec is meticulously examining the higher Permian formations of Puguang, which lie at significant depths, often designated as 'forbidden zones' due to the rapidly changing geological conditions.

In tackling these challenges, Sinopec has succeeded in attaining a drilling success rate of 100% for high-quality shale in its horizontal sections. The precision required for such operations is likened to 'threading a needle' at extreme underground depths. One of the technological feats that facilitated this achievement was the development of ultra-high pressure (UHP) fracturing equipment, capable of optimizing operational parameters dynamically to suit various strata.

This advanced fracturing technology enables the opening of an 'artificial gas route' in the high-pressure layers at depths traditionally regarded as inaccessible. By extracting resources from these deep recesses of the gas reservoir, Sinopec is poised to maximize the development potential of the shale gas resources. Furthermore, Sinopec Zhongyuan Oilfield is preparing a comprehensive exploration strategy to tap into the Upper Permian shale gas, propelling development efficiency and resource transformation.

The ongoing exploration and development of shale gas hold immense strategic significance for China's energy landscape. Sinopec has played a pivotal role since the inception of commercial shale gas development in China, particularly marking its benefits with the discovery of the Fuling shale gas field in 2012. As part of its commitment to high-quality growth in China's shale gas industry, Sinopec continues to initiate technologically advanced solutions and responsible resource management.
