Examining Sustainable Food and Agriculture in Japan
On October 18, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:15 PM, Pal System Tokyo will host an insightful event both at its headquarters in Higashi-Shinjuku and online. This important gathering aims to discuss the current state of agriculture in Japan and educate attendees on the ‘Green Food System Strategy’ established by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 2021. The event will feature five speakers involved in promoting environmentally friendly agricultural practices, providing valuable perspectives for both consumers and producers on our sustainable food future.
Understanding the 'Green Food System Strategy'
One of the key speakers is Mr. Shingo Toyoshima from the Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), based in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture. He will explain the goals of the ‘Green Food System Strategy,’ which aims to enhance food production capabilities while ensuring sustainability. His presentation will outline how NARO is working to spread technologies that reduce environmental impacts through agricultural practices.
Objectives of Pal System's Food and Agricultural Policies
Mr. Tomoaki Kudo, the head of the Direct Sales Division at the Pal System Union Association, will discuss the association’s food and agricultural policies that were first established in 2000 and are set for a comprehensive revision in 2025. These policies aim to ensure food security, promote sustainable production and consumption, guarantee food safety and reassurance, and foster local community building through food. This discussion underlines the association’s commitment to rich regional development in collaboration with consumers.
Reporting from Organic Farming Initiatives
Additionally, the event will highlight the progress of the Organic Village initiative, which promotes community-wide organic agriculture. Representatives from partnerships engaged in direct sales, such as JA Niigata Kagayaki and the Kagoshima Organic Production Association, will present their reports on implementing environmentally-friendly agricultural practices.
JA Niigata Kagayaki, through its collaboration with Agano City, will speak about their promotion of organic school meals. Furthermore, the Kagoshima Organic Production Association, known as one of Japan’s largest groups of organic agricultural producers, will share updates on their activities and the current state of the industry.
