Waterfalls as Symbols of Friendship: Bridging China and Italy's Cultural Exchange
Bridging Cultures Through Waterfalls
In a remarkable show of international cooperation, the Jiulong Waterfalls in Yunnan Province, China, and the Serio Falls near Valbondione, Italy, have been officially twinned since December 2020. This partnership was established to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Italy. Walter Semperboni, the mayor of Valbondione, recently emphasized the significance of these natural wonders as "cultural bridges" connecting the two nations.
During a letter addressing the cultural and economic ties forged through the waterfalls, Semperboni noted their role as symbols of friendship. By linking these scenic sites, both countries aspire to enhance tourism and promote mutual understanding. With the backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty, this partnership has sparked various cultural initiatives over the past five years.
The Jiulong Waterfalls, a stunning natural site attracting tourists with its cascading waters, serve as a significant focal point for visitors from Italy. Hu Yibo, who oversees tourism at the Jiulong scenic area, explained how Italian tourist groups come to engage with local culture through ethnic performances and exhibitions. These activities not only entertain but also provide an immersive experience for visitors, allowing them to explore the rich cultural heritage of China.
On the Italian side, the Serio Falls stand as a renowned attraction across Europe, drawing adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. Through this twinning, both countries are invested in sharing insights on tourism development, environmental sustainability, and scenic area management. The experience gained from overseeing the Serio Falls is invaluable for Chinese counterparts as they strive to enhance the Jiulong Waterfalls' appeal.
