BayCare Launches New Organ Transplant Program to Meet Community Needs
BayCare's New Organ Transplant Program
In a significant step towards improving healthcare accessibility, BayCare has announced its plans to establish a solid organ transplant program at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Florida. This initiative comes in response to the pressing needs of the community in West Central Florida, where residents have often had to leave the region to receive essential transplant services.
Stephanie Conners, the President and CEO of BayCare, spoke about the commitment to better serve local patients, stating, "Every year, dozens of our neighbors leave our region to receive the transplant services they need to live fuller, healthier lives. Our neighbors deserve better and BayCare is committed to providing the highly specialized services they need so they can receive care close to home." This new program aims to transform how residents access transplant care and enhance their quality of life significantly.
As the initiative progresses, BayCare expects to start the program with kidney transplants by 2027. Recent studies highlight a stark gap in the availability of kidney transplant services within the 12-county area BayCare serves. Findings from a 2024 study revealed that approximately 570 individuals in West Central Florida are in need of a kidney transplant each year, yet only 320 to 385 residents received these transplants locally over the past four years. This discrepancy underscores an urgent need for BayCare's new program.
In collaboration with Northwestern Medicine, which is renowned for its expertise in organ transplantation, BayCare is set to enhance the capabilities of its transplant services. This partnership was formed in June 2025 to expand high-specialty medical services across the region. The Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive Transplant Center is recognized nationally and has consistently excelled in meeting federal performance metrics in transplant care. Their involvement will bolster BayCare’s efforts and ensure that patients receive superior service and innovative treatment.
Dr. Satish Nadig, a transplant surgeon and the director of the Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive Transplant Center, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, "We are proud to support BayCare as it establishes this vital program for the West Central Florida community. Our teams bring deep experience in building and sustaining high-performing transplant services, and we look forward to sharing that knowledge to help BayCare accelerate its capabilities."
BayCare is not only a prominent healthcare provider but also operates a comprehensive network within the region. It encompasses 16 hospitals, including a children's hospital, and numerous outpatient facilities throughout Tampa Bay and central Florida. The organization is recognized as the largest provider of behavioral health and pediatric services in West Central Florida, additionally offering urgent care, wellness centers, and home care through BayCare HomeCare.
The overarching mission of BayCare is to enhance the health of all individuals within the community it serves, providing compassionate care through a system designed for high-quality healthcare services.
