Ascend Performance Materials has recently announced the commencement of high-purity acrylonitrile production at its Chocolate Bayou facility in Alvin, Texas. According to Alex Mihut, the Vice President of High-Performance Chemicals at Ascend, this new offering will cater to emerging end markets, thereby strengthening their contribution to advanced technologies. Acrylonitrile, a key ingredient in the production of various polymers and synthetic rubbers, plays a crucial role in diverse applications across the aerospace, renewable energy sectors, and healthcare. Notably, the equipment employed in this new production line was partially funded through a contract with the U.S. government, aimed at ensuring a stable supply of essential raw materials for domestic manufacturing of nitrile rubber gloves.

Scott Van Wagener, the Senior Plant Director at Chocolate Bayou, regarded this development as a notable achievement in the plant's 63-year history, stating, _“We continue to invest in technologies that drive our plant’s growth and support our customers’ needs.”_

Furthermore, Ascend is not stopping at acrylonitrile; it plans to expand its capabilities at the Chocolate Bayou location to include the production of acetonitrile. This solvent is primarily utilized in the pharmaceutical manufacturing process, marking another significant expansion in Ascend's portfolio.
