Hyundai Mobis Secures ISO 26262 ASIL-D Certification



Hyundai Mobis, a leading automotive supplier based in Seoul, South Korea, has recently achieved the highest grade of ISO 26262 certification for its semiconductor development processes. This certification, which conforms to an international standard for functional safety, was awarded for the entire research and development process rather than specific semiconductor products. The rigorous certification stipulates adherence to stringent safety criteria to prevent any potential accidents linked to automotive electrical and electronic systems.

By obtaining this certification, Hyundai Mobis is taking a significant stride towards ensuring that the semiconductors it develops will have a reliability rate comparable to certified products. This achievement is pivotal as the automotive industry increasingly shifts towards more complex electronic systems that require high safety standards. As stated by Lee Hee Hyun, the Vice President of Hyundai Mobis' System Semiconductor RD Group, this certification lays a strong foundation for establishing an R&D environment that emphasizes functional safety, while also reinforcing partnerships with key domestic and international companies.

Hyundai Mobis’ recent certification was granted by Exida–a recognized certification agency in the field of automotive safety and cybersecurity based in Germany. Alongside the ISO 26262 certification, the company received a D grade in the Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL), which is categorized from A to D, with D representing the highest level of safety integrity needed, requiring at least 99% reliability.

This substantial certification affirms Hyundai Mobis’ competence in semiconductor design and the technological stability of its R&D processes. The success stems in part from Hyundai Mobis’ acquisition of Hyundai Autron in 2021, which has significantly propelled the company’s capacity to mass-produce in-house semiconductors. This year alone, Hyundai Mobis anticipates the mass production of 20 million units across 16 different types of semiconductors, enhancing its competitive edge in vital automotive components.

The increasing importance of semiconductors in the automotive realm means that customers are actively seeking suppliers with recognized certifications like ISO 26262. As such, it is expected that this certification will greatly amplify Hyundai Mobis’ attractiveness to global automotive component supply contracts, illustrating the company’s commitment to producing safer and more reliable semiconductor components. Lee remarked, “With this certification, we have secured a strategic foundation in the automotive semiconductor sector, which will determine future mobility competitiveness.”

Currently, Hyundai Mobis is embarking on a mass production venture of 16 types of semiconductors designed for various purposes, including airbag systems, eco-friendly vehicle power units, motor control chips, and components for AVN (audio, video, and navigation) systems. Within the next three years, the company aims to complete 11 next-generation semiconductor designs, including those for battery management systems and integrated communication solutions.

Hyundai Mobis is not only focusing on its internal capabilities but is also enhancing its collaborations with domestic semiconductor firms to foster a thriving automotive semiconductor ecosystem within Korea. The establishment of a joint laboratory with Global Technologies, among other partnerships with leading foundry companies, highlights their proactive engagement in sharing knowledge and co-developing progressive technologies.
