Kolmar Korea Expands into Scalp and Hair Sun Protection Market

Kolmar Korea, a dominant player in the global K-beauty sunscreen trend, is making headlines by extending its product offerings to address the burgeoning demand for scalp and hair sun care. This strategic expansion comes at a time when the global beauty landscape is increasingly focusing on the concept of “skinification,” a trend that encourages a holistic approach to beauty care, treating the scalp and hair as extensions of skincare.

The company recently announced the launch of its innovative product, Scalp Sun Essence, which is a specialized sunscreen designed for direct application to the scalp. Unlike traditional sunscreens, which can often feel heavy or greasy, the Scalp Sun Essence employs a unique blend of water-soluble and lipophilic UV filters in an optimized ratio, resulting in a lightweight texture that is perfect for daily use. With an SPF of 50+, this product is not only appealing in feel but also effective in protecting the scalp from harmful UV rays.

In addition to scalp care, Kolmar is also introducing a new hair photoprotective formulation aimed at shielding hair from detrimental light exposure and UV radiation. Hair is often exposed to various harmful factors, including sunlight and artificial lighting, which can lead to dryness, color fading, and breakage. Unfortunately, many existing hair care products primarily focus on heat protection, neglecting the harmful effects of light exposure. Kolmar Korea tackles this gap with their advanced technology leveraging silicone oils with large molecular structures that effectively disperse light, thus reducing damage.

Moreover, this formulation is designed with versatility in mind. By integrating active ingredients like biotin, panthenol, and niacinamide, these products can also provide additional benefits such as relieving symptoms of hair loss, soothing the scalp, and regulating sebum and pore health.

Kolmar Korea is pioneering efforts to establish a standardized method for assessing UV protection effectiveness for hair, which has been a significant challenge in the industry. Previously, there was no widely accepted way to evaluate how well hair products protected against UV damage. To remedy this, Kolmar has developed a method that assesses color change in hair before and after UV exposure, offering a reliable measurement of UV protection efficacy. This groundbreaking research was published in the esteemed journal Skin Research and Technology, confirming Kolmar’s commitment to scientific rigor and innovation.

As the global sun care market diversifies, the demand for specialized products for scalp and hair is on the rise. A representative from Kolmar summarized their strategic vision, stating, “Leveraging our R&D capabilities in product development and efficacy evaluation, we aim to take the lead in the next-generation hair sun protection market.” With over 70% market share in South Korea, Kolmar Korea has established itself as an essential player in the K-beauty sunscreen genre, best known for its commitment to quality and innovation. The company was the first in the Korean cosmetics industry to receive FDA OTC certification in the United States back in 2013.

In an effort to enhance its research capabilities, Kolmar Korea inaugurated its UV Tech Innovation Lab in 2022, marking a significant milestone for the company. Additionally, collaborations with leading global beauty brands like Beauty of Joseon and Round Lab have resulted in over 100 million units of sunscreen sold worldwide, solidifying Kolmar's status as a leader in the sunscreen market.

Kolmar Korea is slated to launch the Scalp Sun Essence in Korea within this year, with plans for a global rollout that includes the U.S. market next year. As they venture into this new territory, the company is set to not only provide innovative products for scalp and hair care but also to redefine industry standards in sun protection technology.
