Culture In Motion™ Expands into the Mid-Atlantic Region, Strengthening HBCU Culture and Community Spaces

On April 27, 2026, Culture In Motion™, an ambitious national arts and empowerment initiative led by cultural architect Kwanza Jones, made its debut in the Mid-Atlantic region. This innovative roadshow infuses live performances, creative participation, and Apollo-inspired activities directly into local communities in Virginia and Washington, D.C., with a goal of enriching the cultural fabric of the area.

Covering key locations including Virginia Beach, Hampton, Norfolk, Richmond, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., the initiative aims to foster connections, expand avenues for participation, and release creative energy while bridging various audiences through shared cultural experiences. This movement underscores the importance of the Mid-Atlantic as a vital component of America’s cultural landscape, especially with its roots in historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

In this region, particularly known for its vibrant Go-Go music scene in Washington, D.C., and its array of traditional HBCUs, culture is not static—it is a living, breathing entity that evolves through shared experience, engagement, and redefinition. Culture In Motion effectively connects historical legacy with contemporary vibrancy, transforming local creativity into broader opportunities for growth and engagement.

By centering community involvement in its design and execution, the initiative draws upon the legacy of The Apollo and seeks to create pathways for connection, creative expression, and lasting impact. The project stands out by collaborating with local institutions, grassroots activations, and youth-oriented participation mechanisms, aiming to respond actively to the needs of the communities it serves while reinforcing the interconnectedness of the regional cultural ecosystem.

The program actively engages multiple HBCUs and community spaces across the region—namely Hampton University, Norfolk State University, Howard University, and KIPP DC schools—bringing together artists, students, and local leaders through live performances and storytelling activities. This collaborative effort is part of a larger, interconnected movement aimed at establishing community bonds, expanding engagement, and reinforcing cultural infrastructure.

As Kwanza Jones, founder and executive producer of Culture In Motion, aptly stated, "Culture does not exist in isolation; it is born out of mutual shaping and sharing. In the Mid-Atlantic, this spirit runs deep. Culture In Motion is dedicated to igniting that energy, amplifying diverse voices, expanding participation channels, and building connections that transform creativity into sustainable momentum."

One of the program's hallmark features is the SUPERCHARGED® Boost Bus™, a custom mobile cultural hub designed and operated by SUPERCHARGED. This innovative vehicle serves multiple roles as both a transport and a conduit for the broader infrastructure that Jones is establishing. Its arrival in the Mid-Atlantic creates opportunities for engagement, visibility, and connection, transforming public spaces into venues for live cultural exchanges.

The collaboration with The Apollo exemplifies a long-standing commitment to expanding nearly a century of heritage—going beyond Harlem to touch communities across the nation and forge connections with the cultural narratives that have historically shaped its legacy.

As Culture In Motion continues its national tour, its Mid-Atlantic stop reflects Jones’s macro strategy of energizing cultural resources in various regions, enhancing participation channels, strengthening community ties, and building cultural infrastructure with long-term impact.
