A Unique Taste of Tradition at Tokyo Station Hotel
Nestled within the iconic Marunouchi station building, the Tokyo Station Hotel has been a hallmark of hospitality and architectural beauty since its establishment in 1914. Recently, to commemorate its 110th anniversary, the hotel organized an internal cocktail competition to create an original cocktail reflecting their core values of tradition and history. This initiative aligns with the upcoming ‘Classic Hotel Cocktail Fair 2025,’ organized by the Japan Classic Hotels Association, which seeks to breathe new life into classic drinks while ensuring that the art of bartending continues to flourish.
During the competition, a team of 11 staff members from the hotel’s food and beverage department showcased their skills by crafting new cocktails, judged on criteria such as naming, taste, presentation, reproducibility, and creativity. Ultimately, the cocktail 'Mokusei' emerged as the winner. Each cocktail created tells a story, and through the process of creating 'Mokusei', the bartenders not only honor the hotel's longstanding legacy of signature cocktails like 'Tokyo Station' and '1915,' but also look towards the future by exploring fresh flavors and harmonizing traditional techniques with modern creativity.
Introducing 'Mokusei'
The name 'Mokusei' resonates not only with the word 'musk,' which reflects floral qualities, but also embodies powerful meanings associated with Jupiter—expansion and development. The cocktail features a blend of Tanqueray London Dry Gin, Chartreuse Jaune, orange juice, and a syrup made from osmanthus flowers, finished with hints of lime, lemon, and orange peels. This drink symbolizes intertwining destinies through each sip. The soft scent of the osmanthus pleasantly harmonizes with the rich sweetness of the liqueur and the crisp finish of the gin, creating a lovely balance embodied in a warm orange hue.
The Tokyo Station Hotel, much like the fragrant osmanthus that blossoms in the fall, strives to be humble yet elegant, exuding a profound presence without the arrogance that comes with age. It is a reminder that, while they honor a storied history, their mission continues to grow, reflecting the responsibility and pride that accompany their prestigious heritage. Thus, every moment shared with guests is not simply a transaction, but an invitation to become part of a shared narrative steeped in love for history and hospitality.
