Kavalan Wins 'Whisky of the Year' for a Second Consecutive Time at IWC 2026

Kavalan Wins 'Whisky of the Year'

In a remarkable achievement, Kavalan has been awarded the prestigious title of 'Whisky of the Year' for the second consecutive year at the International Whisky Competition (IWC). This accolade highlights the distillery's commitment to crafting exceptional whiskies that stand out on the global stage. Their recent winner, the Peatist Oloroso Sherry Cask Single Cask Strength whisky, scored an impressive 96.97 points, securing the top spot.

A Legacy of Excellence

Kavalan, renowned for its innovative approach to whisky-making, has now claimed an astonishing eleven 'Best Whisky in the World' titles over the last eleven years. Their success isn't limited to one particular expression; they've secured multiple spots in the IWC's top rankings. The Kavalan Solist Fino Sherry from the previous year also dazzled judges, demonstrating the distillery’s strong track record.

The Master Distiller

Adding to the accolades, Zerose Yang, the head of R&D at Kavalan, has been distinguished as the Master Distiller of the Year. This recognition acknowledges not just individual talent but the collective effort and passion exhibited by the entire Kavalan team.

Distinctive Flavor Profile

The Peatist Oloroso Sherry Cask whisky is crafted from lightly peated malt and matured in sherry casks. This unique combination showcases the blend of subtle peaty smokiness with Kavalan's signature maturation process in subtropical conditions. According to Octavio Bernal, a Whisky Master from the Council of Whiskey Masters, the tasting notes reveal an intricate profile: oily leather, earthy tea, hints of anise, grilled mango, and a touch of white pepper lingering in the nose. On the palate, one can expect chocolate-covered raisins and a delicate barbecue smokiness, culminating in an enduring finish that features dark leather and juicy blackcurrants.

The Philosophy Behind Kavalan

YT Lee, the president of King Car Group, elaborated on the philosophy that drives Kavalan, stating, "Our constant pursuit of innovation and excellence forms the core of everything we do. Each award reflects our team's passion and dedication. We are honored to receive recognition from the world's most respected whisky competitions, which motivates us to explore new possibilities for Taiwanese malt whisky."

Industry Impact

Max A. Solano, the director of the International Whisky Competition remarked, "Kavalan has achieved an extraordinary feat by winning the 'Whisky of the Year' award two years in a row in one of the most demanding blind tasting competitions in the industry. The Kavalan Peatist Oloroso Sherry Cask stood out for its exceptional depth, balance, and complexity."

Conducted under rigorous double-blind sensory testing, the IWC evaluates each whisky impartially. Kavalan's performance not only solidifies its position among whisky elites but also sets a benchmark for quality that other distilleries aspire to meet.

Looking Ahead

With the latest accolade, Kavalan continues to push boundaries, having received more than 1,000 international gold medals and various recognitions including eight Distillery of the Year awards. Their whiskies are now extensively available, not just in Taiwan but across selected international markets, including France, Canada, Germany, and beyond.
