Expansion of Urgent Care Services in Southeastern San Diego
In an effort to enhance healthcare accessibility, Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan has announced a significant community investment of
$1 million to support the establishment of the
San Ysidro Health Southeastern San Diego (SESD) Urgent Care Center. The new center, located in the
Joe Vi Jacobs Center, aims to facilitate timely and high-quality medical care closer to home for approximately
153,000 residents in southeastern San Diego.
The grand opening ceremony was attended by key community figures, including Assemblywoman
Dr. LaShae Sharp-Collins, San Diego County Supervisor
Monica Montgomery Steppe, and San Diego City Councilmember
Henry L. Foster III. The initiative highlights the collaborative commitment of both Blue Shield and San Ysidro Health to improve community health outcomes.
Addressing Healthcare Disparities
Southeastern San Diego has long suffered from a lack of urgent care options, leading many residents to seek treatment in emergency rooms for non-emergency issues. This new center is set to change that narrative. Kristen Cerf, President and CEO of Blue Shield Promise, underscored that timely medical access should not be contingent upon geographic location. “For far too long, residents of southeastern San Diego have had limited urgent care options, forcing them to rely on crowded emergency rooms for conditions that do not require such high-level interventions,” she stated.
Designed with an area of roughly
3,300 square feet, the urgent care facility is strategically positioned to provide a trusted community alternative for urgent health needs. The center will not only address immediate health concerns but will also link patients to primary and preventive care services, including basic lab and radiology services, as well as referrals to nearby emergency rooms when higher-level care is necessary.
Community Impact and Conversations
Assemblywoman Dr. Sharp-Collins stated, “These facilities represent more than just access to medical services. They symbolize an opportunity for countless individuals not only to survive but to thrive in San Diego.” Barriers to necessary healthcare have been a persistent issue for community members, and this new center aims to dismantle them, bringing crucial health resources closer to where they live.
Kevin Mattson, CEO of San Ysidro Health, expressed gratitude for the collaboration with Blue Shield. He emphasized the importance of having essential urgent care services available within the southeast community. “Families no longer need to leave the community for vital healthcare outside of normal hours. We are here for the working parent with a sick child, the caregiver worried about an elderly loved one, and for many other after-hours visits. Together, we are expanding access to the critical medical care that every community deserves.”
Long Term Goals
Blue Shield Promise has a longstanding commitment to improving critical healthcare access in the San Diego area. This is evident in their prior support of the
Family Health Centers of San Diego’s Urgent and Cardiac Care Center opened in
July 2023.
Currently, southeastern San Diego is facing exceptionally high rates of chronic illnesses compared to other regions of the county. Social and economic challenges contribute to health disparities, with
13% of residents living below the federal poverty level,
8% lacking health insurance, and
18% of households relying on SNAP/CalFresh benefits. These factors may heighten health risks and hinder residents from managing chronic conditions.
By establishing the San Ysidro Health SESD Urgent Care Center, Blue Shield Promise continues its mission to ease access to vital healthcare services, significantly benefiting a community in great need. For further details regarding the new urgent care center, visit
