Canon Marketing Japan and Kumejima Town's Collaborative Agreement
On July 6, 2026, Canon Marketing Japan Inc. (Canon MJ), led by President Masachika Adachi, entered into a comprehensive partnership agreement with Kumejima Town, located in Japan's Okinawa Prefecture. The agreement focuses on advancing welfare through digital transformation (DX) within the town.
Objectives of the Agreement
The primary goal of this partnership is to enhance the efficiency and sophistication of health and welfare services at the municipal level. A key aspect of this initiative involves the integration of health examination data with everyday data gathered from wearable devices. This collaboration aims to develop a model for the continuous risk assessment of heart diseases, particularly heart failure, through artificial intelligence.
Kumejima Town’s Mayor, Hideo Momohara, and Canon MJ Executive Officer Takuya Jōshin attended the signing ceremony, highlighting their commitment to addressing community health challenges.
Background Context
With aging populations across Japan, there is an increasing prevalence of heart diseases, with many healthcare professionals now referring to this crisis as the “heart failure pandemic.” Timely intervention can significantly improve health outcomes, emphasizing the importance of preventive care and early detection practices.
Kumejima, like many other remote islands, faces significant challenges such as a lack of medical and nursing staff, alongside restricted access to healthcare services. This necessitates innovative new systems to support residents’ health effectively.
Through open innovation and collaborative efforts, Canon MJ has consistently sought to tackle societal issues by harnessing cutting-edge technology and new business ideas. Their partnership with Kumejima reflects a long-standing commitment to creating sustainable healthcare and welfare solutions.
Highlights of the Project
As part of this agreement, Canon MJ will conduct a demonstration study focusing on a model for heart disease prevention. This will involve Kumejima residents, utilizing health indicators—including blood pressure and blood sugar levels—from the local government’s health examination data. Additionally, data collected from wearable devices concerning heart rates, step counts, and sleep patterns will be analyzed.
The aim is to capture changes in health status that may not be detectable through traditional health check-ups, all while continuously visualizing heart disease risk with AI tools. The evaluation will determine the effectiveness of this preventive support provided by the municipal authorities.
Collaboration with Startups
Canon MJ will also apply the technologies developed by General Prognostics Inc., a startup that has been selected through its “spark.me Acceleration Program.” This partnership aims to accurately gauge heart stress levels using data obtained from wearable devices, without the need for invasive blood tests. This advancement hopes to illuminate signs of heart failure early on, allowing for timely medical interventions.
Expected Benefits
1.
Longer Healthy Lifespans: It aims at enhancing the quality of life for residents.
2.
Reduced Medical Costs: Establishing mechanisms to encourage early treatment and prevent severe health issues.
3.
Advanced Health and Welfare Operations: Cultivating data utilization and improving service delivery.
Future Goals
Looking ahead, Canon MJ aims to enhance the capabilities of health professionals and assist in changing resident behaviors positively. Combining data utilization across healthcare, medical, and nursing sectors with remote medical care is pivotal in creating an integrated regional healthcare model. They also plan to share insights gained from Kumejima with other municipalities within Okinawa and explore the possibilities of expanding to other regions across Japan.
Canon MJ is committed to continuously providing sustainable solutions that support community health amidst the challenges posed by a declining and aging population.
