Zespri Unveils Nutritional Fireworks to Visualize Nation's Nutrition Status

Zespri's 'Nutritional Fireworks' Launch Event

On September 2, 2026, Zespri International Japan, led by CEO Ichiro Anzai, held a launch event for 'Nutritional Fireworks - Another Hazard Map' at Konica Minolta Planetarium TOKYO in Yurakucho, supported by the Japan Dietetic Association (JDA). This initiative aims to visualize the nutritional status across Japan, bringing attention to the unseen nutritional issues affecting society today.

Background of the Project

CEO Ichiro Anzai kicked off the event by sharing insights about Zespri's mission to cultivate a better future. He highlighted that approximately one in three adults in Japan suffer from nutritional deficiencies, with 52.1% unaware of their condition—an alarming trend referred to as 'hidden nutritional deficiency.' He described this as a 'new invisible disaster,' stressing that individuals alone cannot combat the risk posed by poor nutritional habits and unhealthy lifestyles.

To address these challenges, Zespri has launched the 'Nutritional Fireworks' project inspired by the historical significance of fireworks in warding off plagues. The goal is to make nutritional issues visible to encourage individuals to recognize and change their eating habits, thereby facilitating the creation of a sustainable food environment.

The Special Projection

The event showcased a stunning visual projection of 'Nutritional Fireworks' within the planetarium dome. This display captured the nutritional landscape across Japan's 47 prefectures, providing attendees with colorful and engaging visuals that represent nutritional data and challenges. The occasion symbolically tied into the wish for a future without nutritional deficiencies and resonated with the audience.

Support from the Japan Dietetic Association

During the event, Takashi Nakamura, chairman of the Japan Dietetic Association, also spoke, underscoring the serious dual burden of malnutrition affecting both individuals and communities. He emphasized the need for improved food environments, advocating for support of the 'Nutritional Fireworks' initiative and expressing hope that it would blossom into a long-lasting impact rather than a fleeting spectacle.

Analyzing Nutrition Data

Kanako Inomata, head of Asia Pacific Marketing at Zespri, then presented findings from a survey involving around 10,000 participants. This extensive analysis examined 89 factors related to nutritional status, food accessibility, economic circumstances, and lifestyle habits. The produced infographics relayed each region's unique nutritional challenges to the audience.

Inomata voiced Zespri's aim to encourage individuals to reassess their dietary practices through the presented data, ultimately fostering partnerships with local communities and organizations for proactive solutions to nutritional issues.

Engaging Discussions

A talk session followed, featuring experts such as Yukari Takemi, vice president of Women's Nutrition University, and Yoshiyuki Gomi, assistant professor at Azabu University. They engaged in discussions about Japan's current nutritional status, highlighting regional disparities in risks influenced by local food culture, economic factors, and living conditions. The conversation reiterated the significance of collaborative efforts between government, businesses, and society to confront these challenges together.

Daily Nutritional Preparedness

In addition, the concept of '365 Days of Nutritional Disaster Prevention' was introduced, emphasizing that nutritional deficiencies are not sudden crises but rather build up over time. Zespri advocated for proactive, everyday actions in meal planning and food storage to reduce nutritional risks.

The guidelines stressed knowing, managing, storing, and improving food supplies, encouraging households to stock essentials like rice, legumes, canned fish, frozen vegetables, seaweed, and fruits to ensure a balanced diet daily.

Introducing the Nutritional Hazard Map

The 'Nutritional Fireworks - Another Hazard Map' website, developed in cooperation with esteemed experts and institutions, provides comprehensive visualizations of nutritional data across Japan. Users can explore each prefecture's nutritional scores, accessing detailed analysis and insights in an engaging online format.

The initiative invites everyone to reflect on their eating habits and local nutritional situations while enjoying the interactive experience.

The Zespri Nutrition Reform Project

Zespri aims to create a society where everyone can enjoy balanced diets 'joyfully and easily.'
