Wyoming Schools to Improve Literacy with Just Right Reader
The Wyoming Department of Education has taken an innovative step to enhance literacy among students in Grades 1 and 2 by announcing the implementation of Just Right Reader's Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™. This initiative, which spans eight school districts throughout the state, aims to foster not only student literacy but also active family engagement in the learning process.
Overview of the Initiative
This program is part of the Comprehensive Literacy State Development (CLSD) grant program and will be rolled out during the current academic year. The Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ include a curated selection of decodable books, hands-on phonics games, and ongoing family literacy workshops designed to reinforce skills learned in school. Children will receive new packs every three weeks, ensuring that resources are tailored to their evolving reading needs.
Sara Rich, CEO of Just Right Reader, emphasized the importance of personalized reading experiences: "Our Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ provide students with the necessary materials to practice reading at home with their families. We are excited to collaborate with Wyoming districts to transform reading into a regular and joyful part of daily life."
Participating Districts
The following districts are involved in this significant literacy initiative:
1. Carbon County School District #1
2. Fremont County School District #1
3. Fremont County School District #14
4. Fremont County School District #21
5. Fremont County School District #25
6. Fremont County School District #38
7. Platte County School District #1
8. Sweetwater County School District #1
These districts will each conduct three Family Literacy Workshops throughout the school year, facilitating connections between families and teachers, and equipping parents with effective strategies to support their children’s reading journeys. Families are encouraged to engage their children in reading for just 10 minutes a day, nurturing a love for literacy at home.
Bridging the Gap Between School and Home
Michaela Robinson, a teacher at Arapahoe Elementary, highlighted the program's potential to bridge the gap between school learning and home practice. "By introducing targeted decodable books and engaging phonics games, Just Right Reader creates an approachable and engaging way for families to get involved in their child’s education, ultimately accelerating literacy growth."
The Take-Everywhere Literacy Packs™ include evidence-based phonics instruction, personalized learning strategies, and teacher-led video lessons available in over 14 languages. This comprehensive support ensures that families feel confident in their ability to foster reading proficiency in their children.
Conclusion
As the school year progresses, the initiatives arising from the partnership between Just Right Reader and Wyoming's school districts are expected to yield significant improvements in literacy rates and family engagement across the state. This program not only aims to develop proficient readers but also strives to create a culture of reading as a shared family activity.
