Gaylord National Resort Unveils Major Rooftop Solar Facility on World Energy Saving Day

Gaylord National Resort's New Solar Initiative

In line with World Energy Saving Day, Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center has proudly announced the activation of a major solar installation spanning approximately 3.5 acres on its rooftop. This initiative symbolizes a breakthrough in the resort's sustainability and energy-efficiency strategy. With a total of 4,696 solar panels installed, the project is expected to yield nearly 3.4 million kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity each year, underscoring Gaylord's commitment to long-term environmental stewardship.

Understanding the Solar Project

The solar array is set to contribute significantly to the resort's energy needs. It may supply up to 20% of the resort's electrical load during peak production periods and aims to offset nearly 50% of the electricity required from local utilities. Coupled with the existing combined heat and power (Cogen) system and advanced building efficiency technologies already in place, this new solar installation enhances Gaylord's comprehensive energy strategy.

Mark Fioravanti, Ryman Hospitality Properties CEO, emphasized the importance of this project by stating, "This endeavor illustrates our partnership with Marriott International, aimed at sustainable development and creating long-lasting value for our stakeholders." He also noted the project's role in decreasing reliance on the local power grid and enhancing operational efficiency, ensuring climate resilience in the years to come.

Activated in June 2026, the solar installation has already generated around 495,316 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy, equating to powering about 48 average American households for a full year. Furthermore, this initiative has prevented an estimated 333 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The full operational capacity of the installation is projected to avoid approximately 2,285 metric tons of CO2 emissions each year, enough clean energy to power around 331 average homes, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards.

Collaboration with REV Energy Ventures

This transformative solar venture was made possible through collaboration with REV Energy Ventures. Jeff Bedard, CEO of REV Energy Ventures, remarked, "Gaylord National's solar initiative showcases the potential for large hospitality properties to adopt renewable energy seamlessly. Its significant scale highlights the operational efficiency and sustainability goals that renewable energy can facilitate.”

Building on Existing Energy Efficiency

The solar installation complements an already strong energy efficiency strategy that has been underway since 2018, with Gaylord National's Cogen system generating substantial electricity while reusing waste energy for heating. This remarkable system has helped fulfill over 75% of the resort's energy needs while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Derek Brauner, Gaylord's director of engineering, stated, "The introduction of solar energy enhances the groundwork we have laid with our Cogen system and other investments in efficiency. By generating power on-site and capturing thermal energy, we optimize operations effectively. This solar array is a pivotal addition to our overarching strategy targeting energy efficiency and sustainability.”

The dual energy strategy not only aids environmental initiatives but also contributes to energy security, allowing the resort to exercise greater control over operating costs while ensuring reliable energy production for its diverse guests and convention visitors.

A Commitment to Sustainability

This solar project is part of a broader commitment by Gaylord National Resort towards sustainability, which includes enhancing resource conservation and reducing waste. The resort actively collaborates with the Food Recovery Network, having donated over 115,000 pounds of surplus food, which is equivalent to providing about 30,000 meals annually to combat local hunger.

Additional sustainability efforts comprise implementing energy-saving infrastructure, constant operational monitoring, rooftop beehives, a dedicated herb garden, and committing to local and sustainable sourcing practices. Waste reduction measures, such as single-stream recycling, eliminating single-use toiletries, and recycling up to 170,000 pounds of cardboard monthly, further demonstrate the resort's significant dedication to the environment.

Conclusion

Gaylord National Resort is not just a premier destination for events and leisure, but also a beacon of sustainability within the hospitality industry. The newly activated solar project not only strengthens its environmental responsibility but ensures efficient and reliable energy solutions for future generations. As the world increasingly pushes for environmental awareness, Gaylord National stands at the forefront leading the change through its innovative energy strategies.
