Exciting Ikebana Exhibition in Nihonbashi: A Celebration of Sogetsu's Artistic Tradition

Ikebana Exhibition: 'Flowers are the Heart'

The Sogetsu school of Ikebana, led by Akane Teshigahara, will present its annual flagship exhibition, the 106th Sogetsu Ikebana Exhibition, from October 22 to October 27, 2025, at Nihonbashi Takashimaya. As we approach the hundredth anniversary of the school's founding in 2027, this exhibition will encompass approximately 500 floral masterpieces from talented Ikebana artists across Japan, showcasing the theme 'Flowers are the Heart' with the rich botanicals of autumn.

This year, a special area will be dedicated to the late ceramic artist Kiyoshi Kato, featuring his unique vases that highlight the harmonious relationship between Ikebana and ceramic art. This unique exhibition captures an unparalleled artistic expression that reflects the profound spirits of both the plants and the vessels.

Message from Akane Teshigahara

'Ikebana is the art of reflecting on one’s own heart and giving it shape through plants. Flowers encompass the heart and represent humanity, transcending eras, languages, and borders, becoming an art form that anyone around the world can appreciate and enjoy. As we approach the centennial of Sogetsu, this exhibition titled 'Flowers are the Heart' aims to reaffirm the essence of Sogetsu.'

Furthermore, a dedicated area will honor the late Kiyoshi Kato, an esteemed ceramic artist who taught the ceramic classes at Sogetsu for 40 years and passed away earlier this year. Attendees can experience the splendid energy of Kato's vessels, cherished by the past masters and the unique floral arrangements inspired by these pieces. My hope is that many people will encounter these distinct flowers that bloom from the heart throughout the venue.

About Sogetsu Ikebana

Founded in 1927 by Soefu Teshigahara, who questioned traditional Ikebana and sought free expression that respects individuality, Sogetsu has encouraged Ikebana creations that can be made at any time, anywhere, by anyone. Using any materials, this school has consistently adapted over time, introducing Ikebana to various environments, including household enjoyment and public displays. As they move towards their centenary in 2027, Sogetsu continues to explore the endless potential of Ikebana for the next hundred years.

About Akane Teshigahara

Akane Teshigahara became the fourth Sogetsu master in 2001. She values free creativity and continues to pursue new expressions suitable for contemporary spaces.
