VIGGO Robots Transform Cleaning Operations at CapitaMall Taiyanggong in Beijing
Automation in Cleaning at CapitaMall Taiyanggong
Two VIGGO SC50 autonomous cleaning robots have recently surpassed the significant milestone of logging over 20,000 operational hours at Beijing’s CapitaMall Taiyanggong. These robots have been crucial in maintaining the mall's cleanliness, which attracts over 30,000 visitors daily. Their deployment marks a pivotal move towards integrating automation in the routine upkeep of high-traffic retail environments.
Deployed nearly two years ago, the SC50 robots have become integral to the mall's housekeeping strategy, primarily handling dust mopping tasks. This automation allows the cleaning staff to focus on more detailed cleaning duties and immediate customer service needs. It’s a strategic shift in managing cleanliness that illustrates how technology can aid in modern operational efficiency.
According to operational records, these robots have successfully completed nearly 4,000 cleaning tasks, covering an enormous cumulative area of about 13.28 million square meters. To put this in perspective, it's equivalent to cleaning approximately 1,860 standard football fields. The consistent performance is indicative of a well-implemented cleaning automation system that meets the demanding cleanliness standards of a busy shopping center.
CapitaMall Taiyanggong houses seven levels and spans around 80,000 square meters of retail space. The heavy foot traffic leads to a continuous need for cleaning, as dust and debris are often brought in by patrons. Additional complexities arise from promotional displays and merchandise arrangements that require regular attention even during business hours. This creates an environment where regular staffing alone may struggle to keep up.
The SC50 units operate on the mall's first and second levels, starting their cleaning routines at 7 a.m., well before shoppers begin to arrive. Each robot is programmed to work autonomously for over 12 hours a day, ensuring they can return to recharge without interrupting their cleaning schedules. Their dust-mopping routines play a critical role in managing dirt accumulation across the mall’s floors, allowing for a consistently clean environment throughout operational hours. Notably, these robots are equipped with collision detection technology, allowing them to navigate around pedestrians safely, enabling them to continue cleaning without halting services during open hours. Since their introduction, there have been no reported safety incidents involving the robots, which reflects positively on their operational design and integration.
For CapitaMall’s housekeeping team, consisting of over 30 staff members, the addition of robots has clarified roles and responsibilities. The workload previously handled by these staff members now sees an equitable reduction, as the two robots can perform tasks equivalent to four full-time cleaning positions. Consequently, cleaning personnel can allocate more time to specific sites where intensive cleaning is necessary, such as entrance carpets, tight corners around storefronts, and escalators, while still being available to promptly address any spills or customer inquiries in dining areas.
The relationship between automated cleaning and human staff not only alleviates the physical demands of cleaning extensive public areas but also offers greater flexibility during peak times, such as weekends and holidays, when shopper numbers surge.
Moreover, gathering cleaning data and maintaining task histories offer managers valuable insights into completed work, which effectively tracks cleaning frequency and validates performance. The implementation of VIGGO SC50 robots at CapitaMall Taiyanggong stands as a robust example of how autonomous technology can be seamlessly integrated into established retail operations. This strategy supports sustained daily coverage, improves workforce allocation, and enhances documented efficiency, showcased over nearly two years of active use.
