Creating Organizations in Japan with Diverse Decision-Makers: Work Shift Institute's Vision

Work Shift Institute: Creating Inclusive Decision-Making Structures in Japan

In an era where diversity is becoming a mainstream expectation within organizations, the Work Shift Institute is at the forefront of championing diverse talent in decision-making roles in Japan. Founded in 2015 and based in Minato, Tokyo, the institute, led by CEO Yuko Kobayakawa, has dedicated itself to easing the challenges faced by individuals balancing both work and parenting responsibilities.

Recognizing the growing need for structural changes within organizations, Work Shift Institute aligns its mission with the April Dream initiative, making April 1 a day to share dreams and visions. This alignment is not just symbolic; it underscores the ongoing commitment to transforming workplace cultures where individuals can thrive without the fear of career stagnation due to family-related responsibilities.

Addressing Systemic Issues

Since its inception, Work Shift Institute has attracted over 23,000 participants to its pioneering seminar series, “Petite MBA for Parental Leave”. This program targets individuals on parental leave, providing them with the tools and knowledge to navigate their careers successfully during and after their leave. In addition, in 2022, the institute rolled out a “Petite MBA Welfare Plan” for corporations, emphasizing structural support for returning employees.

However, the focus has never solely been on facilitating individual training. The real challenge that has emerged over the decade is the structural issues that hinder talented individuals from reintegrating into their organizations post-leave, limiting their career options and adversely affecting the organization's decision-making speed and quality. Such systemic barriers to inclusivity hinder not only individual career progression but the overall efficacy of organizations as well.

Scaling Up the Dream

With a firm belief that organizations can become more resilient and adaptive through inclusive decision-making, Work Shift Institute has elevated its vision. This year, the objective is to create organizations where diverse talents are integral to the decision-making strata. In March, they introduced a new “Organizational Transformation Consulting” service aiming to tackle the pressing issue of insufficient decision-making talent in the age of human capital management.

The consulting service is tailored to assist organizations with diverse needs, from building pipelines for managerial candidates to revising evaluation and promotion processes. It emphasizes designing frameworks that prevent career breakage due to life events like parenting or caregiving. This holistic approach integrates organizational systems, operational strategies, and mindset shifts, fundamentally transforming how organizations operate.

Call to Action for Change

Work Shift Institute recognizes that realizing their dream requires collaboration with like-minded organizations. They empathize with the challenges faced by leaders and HR professionals, including:
  • - “We've invested in training, but our organization hasn't changed.”
  • - “We want to increase female managers, but we lack viable candidates.”
  • - “We have policies in place, but they're not being utilized.”

These conversations are critical to fostering change within organizational decision-making structures. By working together, they aim to reshape cultures and practices to embrace diverse perspectives in leadership roles.

To incentivize collaboration, Work Shift Institute has launched a promotional campaign that offers the Petite MBA Welfare Plan free for one year to companies that sign on for consulting services by the end of the fiscal year in 2026. This opportunity serves as an invitation to organizations to take proactive steps towards inclusivity.
