CATACARB® Achieves Prestigious Carbon Remover Award at Carbon Capture Canada 2025

CATACARB® Wins Carbon Remover Award at Carbon Capture Canada 2025

CATACARB is thrilled to announce its recent achievement of the Carbon Remover Award at the Carbon Capture Canada event held in Edmonton. This prestigious award recognizes trailblazing technologies and practices that enhance carbon dioxide removal, celebrating organizations that have made remarkable contributions in developing and implementing effective carbon removal strategies.

The recognition came largely due to CATACARB’s pivotal involvement in the Stockholm Exergi project, which stands as Europe's inaugural large-scale facility for negative emissions. Through licensing its advanced Enhanced Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) technology, CATACARB played a vital role, supplying a comprehensive process design package and ongoing engineering support to both Stockholm Exergi and Saipem, their selected partner responsible for detailed engineering, procurement, and construction.

Project Manager Tobias Pelicano of Stockholm Exergi praised the collaboration, stating, “The teamwork between Stockholm Exergi and CATACARB has formed a cornerstone in the planning of our new Bio-Energy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) facility. CATACARB has always been prompt in addressing our needs and has provided exceptional support throughout various design phases.”

This accolade serves to underscore CATACARB’s leadership in crafting commercial-scale solutions for CO2 removal and their steadfast commitment to hastening the adoption of technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our atmosphere. The Stockholm Exergi initiative is a prime example of how the integration of engineering, licensing partnerships, and collaborative project execution can propel effective carbon removal at an industrial scale. It is anticipated that the facility will prevent an impressive 800,000 tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere each year.

Accepting the award on behalf of CATACARB, CEO Dr. Gary Buckholz expressed his gratitude, stating, “I accept this award on behalf of A. G. Eickmeyer, who developed the CATACARB technology, which has been refined over the span of 65 years, and to Marc Donnelly, our Vice President and General Manager, who leads the dedicated engineering team at CATACARB in bringing this critical work to fruition.”
