Shanghai Electric Achieves International Milestone in Gas Turbine Market

In a remarkable feat for the energy sector, Shanghai Electric has secured its first international order for high-capacity gas turbines, marking a significant milestone for the company in the global arena. This groundbreaking contract pertains to Unit 3 of the combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) project located in Sarawak, Malaysia, which has a total capacity of 500 MW. This achievement not only underscores Shanghai Electric's advanced gas turbine technology but also highlights the company’s expanding footprint in the competitive international energy market.

The agreement stipulates that Shanghai Electric will deliver a comprehensive turnkey EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) solution for the gas plant, coupled with a long-term service agreement (LTSA) that lasts 25 years, covering all major equipment involved in the project. Notably, all essential components—from gas and steam turbines to heat recovery boilers and air-cooled systems—will be manufactured in-house by Shanghai Electric. This vertical integration allows the company to maintain control over the entire lifecycle of the project, enhancing its ability to provide operational support over decades. By doing so, Shanghai Electric positions itself among the elite players in the high-capacity gas turbine sector.

Currently, Shanghai Electric offers a robust portfolio of high-capacity gas turbines, featuring two main models with rated outputs of 300 MW and 78 MW respectively. To date, the company has successfully delivered 103 units, contributing to an impressive total installed capacity exceeding 21,000 MW across various operational projects. Additionally, the units maintained under Shanghai Electric’s long-term service agreements have collectively logged over 1.3 million operational hours.

With a solid production capability for both types of turbines, Shanghai Electric is poised to unveil new units available for delivery starting 2028. In addition to the Malaysian company that awarded the current contract, project developers in Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam have also expressed significant interest in future orders, indicating a growing demand for Shanghai Electric’s innovative energy solutions across the region.

This contract serves as both a recognition of Shanghai Electric's technological advancement and a strategic move to strengthen its position in the Southeast Asian energy market.
