University of Bridgeport Launches Men's and Women's Rowing Teams to Start in Fall 2025

University of Bridgeport Expands Athletic Offerings with New Rowing Teams

The University of Bridgeport (UB) is thrilled to announce a significant expansion of its athletic programs with the introduction of men's and women's rowing teams, set to debut in the fall of 2025. This exciting addition highlights UB's commitment to enhancing student engagement and promoting competitive sports on campus.

The launch of these rowing teams is made possible through a generous contribution from Howard Winklevoss, the founder of RowAmerica, an organization devoted to fostering the sport of rowing across various communities. Winklevoss's support is a game-changer as it will cover essential start-up costs, including purchasing boats and developing water training facilities.

Leadership and Coaching

UB's women's crew team will be guided by head coach Mary Jean (MJ) McNamara, while the men's team will be under the leadership of Luke Auger. Both coaches bring a wealth of experience to their roles. McNamara was a standout rower at Fordham University and has held coaching positions at institutions like Brenau University and King School in Stamford, CT. Expressing her enthusiasm, she said, "I look forward to developing UB's first women's crew team; this opportunity will not only introduce a new sport but also elevate UB's presence on the Sound."

On the men's side, Auger, a four-year varsity rower at Fairfield University, has an extensive coaching background, having previously coached at Fairfield University and local youth teams. "Rowing demands teamwork for success, and I believe UB’s student-athletes are ready to embrace this challenge," he remarked, highlighting the collective spirit of the sport.

A Boost for the Community

UB's Vice President for Athletics and Recreation, Jay Moran, regards this initiative as a pivotal moment for the university and the Bridgeport community. He noted, "Today marks an exciting milestone that reflects our desire to innovate and foster partnerships that benefit both UB and the wider community. I cannot wait to see our teams take to the water and showcase their talents!"

President Danielle Wilken echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that rowing embodies critical values such as teamwork and resilience. She expressed hope that this new sport would inspire not just the student-athletes but also cultivate deeper connections between UB and the greater Bridgeport community. "The transformational support from Howard Winklevoss and RowAmerica will undoubtedly reshape our waterfront landscape," she stated, appreciating the significance of their contribution.

Upcoming Competitions

The Purple Knights rowing teams are anticipated to commence competitions in the spring of 2026, practicing on the scenic Long Island Sound – a hub for rowing in Fairfield County. This strategic choice will put UB among several other high school and collegiate teams, adding another layer of excitement to the regional rowing scene.

Those interested in learning more about the rowing program or recruitment opportunities can reach out to Jim Sheehan, assistant director of athletic communications. For updates on UB Athletics, fans can follow their social media or visit their official website.

As the University of Bridgeport prepares to launch its rowing teams, not only are they setting sail toward new opportunities for competition and community engagement, but they are also paving the way for future students to embrace the sport of rowing with enthusiasm and dedication.
