Andrzej Bargiel Achieves First Oxygen-Free Ski Descent of Nanga Parbat

Andrzej Bargiel's Historic Descent

Andrzej Bargiel, a Polish athlete sponsored by Red Bull, has made history by becoming the first person ever to ascend and then ski down Nanga Parbat without using supplemental oxygen. This incredible feat took place during his expedition titled "Hic Sunt Leones – Nanga Parbat Ski Challenge 2026," which concluded on June 30, 2026.

Nanga Parbat, towering at 8,126 meters, is notorious for its treacherous conditions and is one of the deadliest peaks among the world’s 8,000-meter mountains. Despite numerous attempts in the past, no expedition had successfully linked the summit to the snow line in a continuous ski descent. Bargiel's achievement marks a monumental milestone in the history of mountaineering and skiing.

The journey began early in the morning on June 28 when Bargiel set off from the base camp at 4,200 meters. Displaying both skill and endurance, he ascended without bottled oxygen, stopping overnight at Camp II (6,200 m) and Camp III (6,850 m). After reaching the summit, he spent 45 minutes at the top before strapping on his skis.

Opting for the Messner route for his descent, Bargiel skillfully navigated around a barrier of seracs that had previously forced other climbers to remove their skis. He completed his ski descent at 3 PM, reaching a point just below Camp I (4,400 m). Most notably, Bargiel spent two hours above 7,900 meters in the mountain’s death zone.

Reflecting on his successful attempt, Bargiel stated, "I knew that timing and favorable weather would be key to this project’s success. I’m glad we managed to find a path that allowed for a safe descent. I thank the entire team and Red Bull for their incredible support.”

With this achievement, Bargiel continues to push the boundaries of high-altitude skiing. He previously became the first individual to ascend and ski some of the world’s most challenging peaks, including Broad Peak, K2, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, and Everest, all without supplemental oxygen. His journey to conquer these impressive mountains began back in 2015 with Broad Peak.

Bargiel's passion for high-altitude sports and his commitment to exploring uncharted territories in mountaineering have positioned him as a leading figure in the skiing world. His expertise not only showcases the physical capabilities of human endurance but also highlights the importance of preparation, teamwork, and perseverance in achieving the seemingly impossible.

As footage of his descent circulates around the world, skiing enthusiasts and mountaineers alike celebrate Bargiel’s groundbreaking accomplishment. His legacy lives on, inspiring future generations to reach for the high peaks and redefine the limits of adventure. Bargiel's story serves as a reminder that with determination and the right conditions, extraordinary achievements are indeed possible, even on the most challenging terrains of our planet.

In conclusion, Andrzej Bargiel has not only made a mark on the mountains of Pakistan but has also etched his name in the annals of extreme sports history. His unparalleled achievement on Nanga Parbat is a testament to his skills and tenacity, and it will undoubtedly inspire climbers and skiers for years to come.
