The Importance of Effective English Presentations in Multinational Companies
In the modern corporate landscape, especially within multinational companies, the ability to effectively present ideas and proposals in English is paramount. A recent survey conducted by Language Teaching Revolutions, the company running the English school FORWARD based in Shibuya, Tokyo, highlights significant challenges faced by professionals using English in their work. The survey focused on expatriates working in foreign companies, revealing insights into their presentation frequency, perceived importance, and obstacles they encounter.
Background of the Survey
As globalization continues to rise, the ability to articulate one’s strengths and proposals in English is increasingly scrutinized. Yet, there is a lack of understanding regarding how these employees perceive English presentation skills and what specific challenges they face. Therefore, FORWARD undertook a comprehensive survey of expat employees in foreign companies who communicate in English.
Survey Findings
1.
Frequency of Presentations: Over half of the respondents (52%) indicated they conduct English presentations several times a month, with 19% doing so weekly, reiterating the significance of this skill in their roles.
2.
Perceived Importance: Nearly 90% acknowledged the importance of English presentations in business contexts, with the leading reason being the necessity to effectively communicate expertise and seize business opportunities.
3.
Key Factors for Success: Respondents identified the top factors contributing to a successful presentation as follows:
- Clear conclusions and supporting logic (25.3%)
- Relevant past achievements and concrete data (22.2%)
- Passion and vision regarding their work or proposals (20.8%).
4.
Self-Assessment: Approximately one-third of the participants felt they were not adequately equipped to deliver effective presentations for business success, often attributing this to uncertainties in handling unexpected questions or lacking confidence in their pronunciation and fluency.
5.
Obstacles to Effective Presentations: The primary reasons cited for ineffective presentations included difficulty in managing unexpected questions (40.9%) and a lack of confidence in their speaking abilities (31.8%).
Detailed Survey Insights
The survey, conducted from November 26 to December 2, 2025, comprised 221 participants aged between 20 and 50, targeting employees who use English in foreign firms. The findings reveal a critical gap between the perceived importance of English presentations and the confidence in executing them.
Frequency Insights
Among those surveyed, the most common response regarding the frequency of English presentations was “weekly” at 19.0%, followed closely by “once a month” (18.1%). These results suggest that presentation skills are frequently called upon, yet many employees feel underprepared.
Importance of English Presentations
When asked about the significance of English presentations in business, 54.3% rated it as “very important,” while an additional 33.0% considered it “somewhat important.” This leads to a clear conclusion that a substantial majority of employees prioritize enhancing their presentation abilities.
Reasons for Significance
The overwhelming consensus on the need for effective English presentations highlights the competitive nature of business communication. The ability to communicate one’s expertise effectively not only opens doors to opportunities but also fosters trust and facilitates negotiations.
Perceived Effectiveness and Challenges
Despite recognizing the importance of effective presentations, a notable percentage of respondents (29.8%) acknowledged difficulties in achieving success. Many linked this to challenges in engaging with spontaneous questions or lacking the necessary fluency.
Conclusion
This survey illustrates a critical need for targeted educational programs aimed at improving English presentation skills among professionals in multinational settings. Language Teaching Revolutions has responded to this need by offering practical classes focusing on public speaking and logical reasoning in English. Programs are designed to enhance fluency, articulation, and, ultimately, presentation effectiveness.
