Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas Initiate Groundbreaking Diabetes Campaign in India

Launching a New Hope for Diabetes Awareness in India

On December 2, 2025, a significant campaign was launched to address Type 1 diabetes awareness in India, spearheaded by the global nonprofit organization Beyond Type 1, co-founded by Nick Jonas. This initiative, referred to as The Beyond Type, is particularly crucial since India has the largest population of children and adolescents living with this condition and where information often remains limited. The campaign falls on Giving Tuesday, underscoring the organization’s commitment to fostering grassroots partnerships in communities that are under-resourced while confronting stigma surrounding the disease.

A Star-Studded Initiative

In a touching Instagram post, Nick Jonas, alongside his wife, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, announced the campaign’s launch. Together, the couple reaches a staggering 135 million followers, allowing them to uplift voices and narratives from individuals living with Type 1 diabetes. This campaign uses the hashtag #TheBeyondType to challenge existing stigmas associated with the condition and advocate for understanding and respect. It aims to highlight that diabetes does not define individuals but rather showcases their resilience and the talent they possess.

Among the inspiring stories featured in this initiative is that of 13-year-old karate champion Mehrin Rana and the dancer and actor Indu Thampy. These stories are pivotal in raising awareness and aiding a better understanding of the challenges those living with Type 1 diabetes face, aiming to foster empathy and support.

Bridging the Gap

Nick Jonas emphasizes the significance of proper care and support in managing diabetes effectively: "I know for myself how diabetes doesn't have to limit you, but only when you have access to the right care, tools, and support." His understanding of the Indian culture and diabetes community, deepened through his family, adds a personal touch to this initiative. He expressed pride in the progress made thus far but recognized the urgent need in India where many face barriers in accessing treatment and education.

The Beyond Type campaign is not only an awareness initiative but also a conduit for real change. Beyond Type 1 has partnered with various organizations in India, including HRIDAY, UDAAN, Blue Circle Diabetes Foundation, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, Nityaasha Foundation, Gram Jyoti, and SAMATVAM Trust. These partnerships focus on delivering essential resources, toolkits, and educational materials that help families, as well as healthcare providers, recognize early symptoms of diabetes. Such collaborations aim to bolster the availability and accessibility of healthcare across the most underserved regions.

The Voices Behind the Campaign

Priyanka Chopra Jonas also expressed her commitment to voicing stories from the Type 1 diabetes community, stating, "India has extraordinary people living with type 1 diabetes, yet their stories are rarely heard." She emphasized her learnings through her husband Nick and reiterated how many individuals show immense strength and determination daily. The campaign is designed to spotlight these narratives and eliminate the stigma that too often accompanies diabetes diagnoses.

This initiative is an extension of the organization’s previous Beyond Barriers initiative, which notably reached out to three million individuals in India and improved early detection and ongoing support for diabetes management. In addition, during its 10th anniversary celebration entitled Beyond Limits, Beyond Type 1 raised funds specifically to reach an additional 288,000 people in high-need areas across the United States and India.

CEO Deborah Dugan stated, "Beyond Type 1 was founded to challenge outdated narratives and ensure no one faces diabetes alone." The urgency of the situation in India cannot be overstated. By collaborating with local partners to enhance education and resources, the organization is working to foster a comprehensive support system for those affected by diabetes.

The recent campaign launch follows Beyond Type 1's successful Go Beyond campaign, which released its impactful video Beyond the Misconceptions in October, featuring Jonas, which has already amassed over two million views.
