Celebrating 20 Years of the USO at Ontario International Airport
On October 8, 2026, Ontario International Airport (ONT) proudly commemorated the 20th anniversary of the USO at ONT, a key institution offering vital support and comfort to traveling military members and their families. Over the past two decades, the USO's presence has made a significant impact, serving tens of thousands of active-duty service personnel as they navigate the rigors of travel.
A Valuable Resource for Military Travelers
The USO at ONT has established itself as a trusted haven for service members moving between military installations, attending training exercises, or returning home. With its comprehensive range of amenities, the center helps ease the burdens of travel by providing meals, refreshments, Wi-Fi access, entertainment options, and a serene place to relax. Staff members and volunteers are dedicated to assisting with transportation logistics and flight connections, ensuring a smoother transition for military travelers.
In its most recent operational year, the USO at ONT had the privilege of serving 21,879 people, nearly double the number from the previous year. This uptick reflects the increasing demand for the services offered, underscoring how significant the USO's role is in supporting the military community.
Highlights from the Anniversary Celebration
The milestone anniversary was marked by a public ceremony that featured facility tours and the familiar sight of volunteers serving hot dogs—a cherished offering for military members and their families. Atif Elkadi, the CEO of the Ontario International Airport Authority, emphasized the importance of the USO's mission: "For 20 years, the USO at ONT has provided meaningful support to the men and women who serve our country and their families. This milestone reflects the dedication of the volunteers, staff, and community partners who have created a welcoming atmosphere at our facility."
Brandi Elias, the USO Inland Empire Area Operations Manager and proud mother of a service member, expressed that the center's efforts make a pivotal difference in the lives of those it serves. "Many of the service members we welcome travel long distances, managing demanding schedules; thus, a friendly face and a comfortable place to pause can significantly impact their experience."
Community Support Makes It Possible
The operation and services of the USO are made possible through a combination of donations, volunteer support, and community partnerships. A prime example of this community engagement is the annual 5K at the Runway event, which has so far raised over $168,000 to support the USO's mission. The upcoming fifth annual race is scheduled for February 6, 2027, and promises to continue this tradition of community involvement.
Elkadi commented on the invaluable partnership between ONT and the USO, expressing gratitude for everyone who has contributed to the center's success over the last 20 years. “We appreciate all that the organization does for our military members and their families, and we look forward to our partnership for many years to come,” he said.
