Honoring Our Heroes: The 80th Commemoration of WWII
On August 30, 2025, Pearl Harbor will host a grand celebration marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. This poignant event will bring together twenty-two World War II veterans, providing a unique opportunity to pay homage to the courageous individuals who helped shape our world.
The commemoration will extend from August 30 to September 2 and will feature a diverse lineup of activities, including a concert by Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band, a film premiere, and an exciting RC Airshow. Families and individuals from all walks of life are welcome to join in the festivities at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, a significant historical site that served as America’s first WWII aviation battleground.
A Tribute to Valor and Sacrifice
Linda Hope, Chair and CEO of the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation, emphasized the gravity of this moment: "This will be one of our last chances to honor the heroes of World War II in person. It's a privilege to salute those who served and the everyday Americans who supported the war effort from home. They made unparalleled sacrifices that restored peace to the world."
This commemoration is made possible through a collaboration between notable organizations, including the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation, the Gary Sinise Foundation, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Together, they ensure that the legacy of WWII veterans is preserved, inspiring future generations.
Among those attending the event will be seven USS Missouri crew members who witnessed the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945. John Gleeson, a former Staff Sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Forces, shared his thoughts, stating, "Even when the war in Europe ended, we knew it wasn't over until Japan surrendered. It was a significant time to serve, and I am proud to have been part of that history."
Remembering a Historic Moment
The official commemoration ceremony is set to take place on September 2, exactly 80 years since the historic signing of the Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri. This pivotal event marked the conclusion of a global conflict that had claimed millions of lives and altered the course of history.
On this day, attendees will salute a total of 23 WWII veterans, including eight members of the USS Missouri crew who participated in the surrender ceremony. Notable participants include veterans like Andrew Bostinto, Charles Braun, and Patrick Zilliacus, each sharing their personal stories and experiences from the war.
A Special Journey for Veterans
The veterans attending the commemoration will do so at no cost, thanks to efforts from non-profit organizations such as Beyond The Call and the You Were Worth IT Foundation. Tracie Hunter, President and Founder of WWII Beyond the Call, stated, "We are dedicated to bringing these heroes back to Pearl Harbor and their battlefields as long as they are willing and able. The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum plays a pivotal role in making these trips memorable for our veterans."
Eighty years since the end of World War II, this commemoration provides a powerful moment to reflect and remember the sacrifices made for peace. The event's schedule includes numerous public activities at the Battleship Missouri Memorial and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, promising an engaging experience for all guests.
